Description
1970 D. T. MARTIN Q I PAiEBBOARD DISPLAYS Filed Dec. 4, 1967 ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,494,479 PAPERBOARD DISPLAYS Daryl T. Martin, St. Paul, Minn-Z, assignor to Hoerner- Waldorf Corporation, St. Paul, Minn., a corporation of Delaware Filed Dec. 4, 1967, Ser. No. 687,556 Int. Cl. A47f' 3/14; B65d /36 US. Cl. 211-126 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to an improvement in paperboard displays and deals particularly with a one piece structure which may be folded to form a tray-like body having a display panel along the rear thereof.
Display units for containing one or more items of merchandise, pamphlets or other such material. have been made in considerable volume. Most of such objects are in the form of trays having a top panel which may be folded into upright position for display purposes. The present device is not designed to contain material during shipment but is designed to provide a display which is normally a flat sheet and which maybe quickly and easily folded into a display container having a display panel which is somewhat wider than the pocket into which the items are displayed, and side panels which are somewhat wider than the material being displayed, thus, providing an unusually large display area.
An object of the present invention resides in the pro vision of a display which includes a front display panel having a pair of side walls hingedly connected to opposite side edges thereof, the side walls being foldable into parallel relation extending rearwardly from the front panel. A supporting strap is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the front panel, and is folded inwardly and downwardly to lie in face contact with. the rear surface of the front panel. A bottom panel is hinged to the lower edge of the strap, and a rear wall or display panel is hingedly connected to the rear edge ofthe bottom panel. The side panels and the display panel are provided with intersecting slots which hold the display in its assembled position.
A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a display having a display panel which normally slopes rearwardly. The display also includes a bottom wall. which is horizontal, or a bottom wall which is at right angular relation to the rear wall and display panel. If individual cartons are to be displayed, the bottom wall may -be supported at right angular relation to the rear display panel to hold the articles contained against the rear panel.
These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings forming a part of the specification:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the display in set up position.
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view through the 3,494,479 Patented Feb. 10, 1970 display, the position of the section being indicated by the lines 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view through the display at right angles to FIGURE 2, the position of the section being indicated by the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the blank from which the display is made.
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 showing the walls proportioned so that the bottom panel is at right angles to the rear or display panel.
As is indicated in FIGURE 4 of the drawings, the display A includes a front wall panel 10 which is hingedly connected by fold lines 11 at opposite end edges to side panels or wings 12. As indicated in FIGURE 4, the lower edges 13 of the side walls 12 are in equal angular relation to the lower edge 14 of the front panel 10, the degree of angle between the edges 13 and 14 determining the extent to which the front wall 10 will slope rearwardly.
As indicated in the drawings, a pair of cut lines 15 define the upper edges of the side portions of the front wall 10, the cut lines 15 sloping downwardly and inwardly from the upper corners 16 of the front Wall. The inner opposed ends 17 of the cut lines 15 curve downwardly toward parallel relation, and these cut line ends 17 are connected by a double score line 19 extending parallel the lower edge 14 of the front panel 10. This arrangement provides a substantially trapezoidal strap 20, the shorter parallel edge of which is defined by the fold lines 19, and the wider parallel edge 21 is defined by a fold line connecting the supporting strap 20 to the rectangular bottom panel 22. The bottom panel 22 is of proper width to fit between the side walls 12 when these side walls are folded into right angular relation to the front panel 10.
The bottom panel 22 is hingedly connected by a fold line 23 to a rear wall or display panel 24, the fold line 23 being parallel to the fold line 21. In the particular arrangement illustrated, the side walls 12 increase in height from their bottom edges 13 to their rear edges 25. Slots 26 are provided in the upper edges of the side walls 12, or generally at the intersection between the upper edges 27 of the side walls 12 and the end edges 25 thereof. The slots 26 extend parallel to the fold lines 11 connecting the front wall 10 to the side walls 12. While this is a matter of choice, having the slots 26 parallel the fold lines 11 results in having the rear wall 24 parallel to the front wall 10.
The display panel 24 is provided with laterally extending projections 29 which terminate in spaced relation to the fold line 23, and slots 30 are provided extending into the projections 29, the slots 30 forming continuation of the side walls 31 of the lower portions of the rear wall. The distance between the base of each slot 30 and the fold line 23 is substantially equal to the distance between the base of each notch 26 and the lower edge 13 of the side walls. Thus, when the slots 26 and 30 are interlocked together, as indicated in FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings, the bottom panel 22 is substantially horizontal as indicated in FIGURE 2.
In the event, the display A is designed to contain small cartons or other objects which are designed to be supported against the rear wall, the height of the front panel may be increased and the length of the strap decreased as indicated in FIGURE 5 of the drawings. As indicated in this figure, the front panel is formed so that the transverse fold lines 119 are somewhat higher than in FIGURE 2 of the drawings, and the strap 120 is correspondingly shorter. The bottom wall 122 may accordingly be supported in right angular relation to the rear panel 124 by the side walls 112 when the side walls and rear panel are interlocked.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my display; and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that obvious changes may be made within the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
