Description

C. H'. THORDARSON. CASE FOR TRANSFORMERS AND THE LIKE. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 22. 1917.

MH HIWFIH.

CHESTER H. rHoBnARson', OF'GHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
casn r03 m msronmnns AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHESTER H. THoRnAn- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Transformers and the like; and I do herebv declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel case for small electrical transformers, such as bell ringing transformers and refers more specifically to novel means of forming attaching lugs onthe case by which-'to' attach the case to a support.
It is the practice, and is required, to space the transformer case away from its support by means of suitable fastening devicesso as to permit circulation of air between the case and its support.
It is the purpose of this invention to produce an exceedingly simple, economical and eflicient form of attaching lugs .by which the case is attached to the support and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts shown in the drawings, and described in the specification, and is pointed out in the appended claims.v
In the drawings:
F igure l is aside elevation .of a transformer case, embodying my invention.
the case on which the attaching lugs are formed. v
Fig. 3 isan end, view of said wall. The case 10, which is-made of sheet metal,
comprises a ends, and two end wall members 12, 13,
which are provided with flanges 14, 15 that overlap the body 11 of the case at its open ends.
'16 and 16', 1'6 ing' the case to a support, as the vertical wall 17. In accordance with thepresent inven- .tion the-said lugs are formed principally of material cut away fromthe rim 15, said material being left integral with the end wall I of the case along the lines 18'at which the lugs are joined to said 'end wall. The terminals of said lugs are turned outwardly to form feet 20,- Which are apertur'ed to receive fastening screws.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one wall'of I main body 11, opened'at both.
With integral attaching designate lugs for attachas my invention, I hereunto append Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
- Application filed January 22. 1917. Serial u 143,677.
Preferably, and as herein shown, the wall plate 13 is provided with three attaching lugs,-one at one end and two at the other end, giving three point support for the case.
he manner of forming the lugs from the case wall shown and described produces an exceedingly strong and rugged lug with the use of but little more metal than is required to form the flange orrim 15 of the end wall, and the removal of the metal from said flange or rim to not to any appreciable extent weaken the at- 'taohm'ent of the flanged end wall to the body of the case. Furthermore, the method shown of producing said lugs is an exceedingly economical one, there being no parts required to be attached by rivets or like fastening devices. Moreover, the work re quired to produce lugs is entirely a die or swaging operation; therefore the labor cost of producing the device is greatly lessened.
' lugs formed principallyfrom the metal 0 the. flanges of said cover at opposite ends thereof and turned outwardly at an angle to said cover ina direction opposite to said flange. 1'
2. A sheet metal wall for acase of the character set forth telescope over the case and which has interruptions at opposite ends wall being provided at said interruptions angles to the wall and extending in directions opposite to the Whollv in rear of said'flange.
- In witness whereof I claim the foregoing my signature in the presence of two witnesses at Chi7cago, Illinois, this 10th day of January, 191
oHEsTERH. THORDARSON.
