Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1918.
Application filed December 29, 1916. Serial No. 139,486.
T1,;- aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALonn E. GIBBONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Outlet- Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to outlet boxes of the type commonly used for positioning electric conduits in the walls of buildings, and the like places. where it is necessary, both for safety and convenience, that the wires shall be effectively supported and insulated from each other, and present improvement makes special provision for clamping the spirally, wound armor, surrounding such wires, securely in its operative position.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, Figure 1 being a back side. perspective, view of a flanged box which serves as an important element of my improved outlet box. and Fig. 2 is an outer face. plan. View of the assembled outlet box. Fig. 3 a transverse, sectional, view of said box taken on the line 33 of said Fig.
Fig. 4; is a relatively enlarged sectional view of portions of the box showing particularly the manner of clamping the armor tube fixedly in position.
Referring to these drawings the letter a indicates the wall-box member of my said outlet-box, the same being preferably struck up from sheet metal and formed with a concentric flange Z) and with an outer. circumferential. rim 0. (Z denotes a disk which is suitably sized to fit easily in the rim 0. and is secured to the flange I) by means of screws e.
In utilizing my described device the box member a is seated in the wall 1 so that the circumferential rim 0 is flush with the face of the wall, it being assumed that the armored wires have been previously located in the wall, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The exposed end of the armor (k) is passed through the flange b and is then expanded, as seen in Fig. 4, the electric wires being of such length that they may extend a considerable distance beyond the armor. The disk (I is then entered in the rim 0 and secured fixedly to the flange 5 by means of the screws 6, the electric wires extending through openings (5 in the disk, and the expanded end portion of the armor being clamped immovably between the disk and flange b.
The wires may then be bent over into the box a and passed through a suitable hickey or they may be connected to the electric fixtures in any other desired manner, the depth of the cup formed by the rim 0 being such that the bent wires fall entirely inside of the face of the wall, thus rendering it possible to utilize a flat escutcheon as an ornamental closure for the opening in the wall, instead of the outwardly cupped, boxlike. escutcheons now so commonly used.
'My described improved outlet box may be very cheaply produced from sheet metal and it effectually anchors the armor covering of the wires so that said wires cannot become loosened or disarranged with respect to each other so as to create a short circuit.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent A device of the type described, including a wall-box having a concentric flange with an outer circumferential rim, a disk adapted to be received within the annular eniargement, the resultant of said concentric flange and circumferential rim. and fastenings effecting the attachment of said disk to said flange, and whereby said disk may be iaced from the latter, said flange having orifices for the passage therethrough of armored wires and said disk h. ing orifices for the passage therethrough of the wires, the space between said disk and flange receiving the exposed ends of the armored wrappin gs and whereby said ends may be clamped in place between said disk and flange by manipulating said fastenings.
