To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, VERNON H. Jonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVauconda, in the of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Imiprovements in Try-Squares, of.
which the following is a specificatlon. This invention relates to an improved try-square and the prlncipal object of the invention is to provide an lmproved attachment for a try-square which attachment will permit the try-square to be used as a miter square.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this attachment that it will not interfere with the try-square being used in the ordinary manner, as a try-square.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that a conventional construction of try-square may be used and to further so construct the attachment that it may be put in place upon a try-square already in use. j
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be simple in construction and easy to operate.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View showing a try-square in top plan and provided with the improved attachment.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a view showing the try-square in side elevation, one end portion of the handle section of the try-square being broken away.
This try-square is provided with a blade 10, one arm 10 of which carries the handle plates or strips 11 which plates or strips may be formed either of metal or wood. An arcuate slot 12 is formed in the blade 10 and for use in connection with this slot, there has been provided a scale 13 extending parallel to the slot. A hinged strip or carrier 14 is Specification of Letters Patent.
county of Lake and State miter arms may 14: with fsecuredto the handle portion of the square i j by fasteners extending 1 miterarms 16 and 17 extend transversely across the blade and are provided withopenratenteaneeaiaie. Application filed October 27, 1917. Seria1No.198,830i i Y nto the strips 11 and ;this hinged strip is provided at one end with j the hinge ears lopositioned above and below l f j the arm 10' of the blade and serving to pivotally mount the miter arms 16 and 17. These ings 18 and 19 to receive the threaded stem of the ened serves to hold the miter arms 1n a set position upon the blade.
ordinary try-square with the miter attachment in the position shown in Fig. 1 or the upon the scale as shown and the fastener in the set position and permitting this square to be used as a miter square. As this will be readily seen that itwill not benecessary to provide any special construction of square 1n order to put the attachment in place and it will be further seen that this attachment may be connected with square already in use, it slmply being necessary to provide a slot 12 and then connect thestrips the handle portion of the. square. What is claimed is j i i 1. A try-squarecomprising a dle plates secured to opposite sides of said blade adjacent one end thereof, a hinged. strip extending longitudinally along one edge of said blade andhaving its side edges overlapping and secured to the edges of said handle plates,ears formed on one end of said fastenerQOWhich fastener when tight:
. This square may be used either as an bemoved to a desiredpoint. l;
then tightened, thus holding the miter arms bladefhana strip beyond the adjacent ends of said plate,
and positioned on opposite sides of said blade, miter arms engaging oppositesides of said blade, and pivotally secured at one end to the inner faces of said ears, andmeans for simultaneously adjusting and securing saidarms in adjusted position, said means also serving as a handlewhen moving said arms to ad ustedposition.
2. A square comprising a blade having arcuate slot, handle plateslfitting against" gt r 1,286,332
opposite sides of said blade, miter arms engaging opposite sides of the blade and hingedly connected to said plates one of said arms having an opening therein, an extension carried by the opposite arm and movable therewith, said extension being arranged to project-through the slot in said blade and through said opening, and a In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
