To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Floor-Vises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to a floor-vise adapted for use by carpenters and others who may have occasion to hold doors, window-sashes, and other like articles on edge for trimming and finishing purposes.

My object is to provide a device of this class adapted to effectually and satisfactorily perform the function of supporting the dooror other article on edge, as aforesaid, and which shall at the same time be of simple and economical construction.

To these ends the invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device in use, a door being shown in position in the vise. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the device shown in detail and on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the device on the line a; m, Fig. 1.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.

Let the numeral 5 designate each of two twin members hinged together, as shown at 6. To one of these members is attached a leafspring 7 by means of a screw or other fastening device 8. This spring passes over the hinge and engages the opposite member, whereby the two members are normally supported in the position shown in Fig. 3, their central portion being raised above the surface upon which their feet 5 rest and a space being left between the members above the spring. To the upper inner extremity of each member is pivotally connected a clampingblock 9, as shown at 10, each member being cut out, as shown at 5, to allow the block to swing on its pivot and automatically adjust itself to the surface of the article to be held. The recess, as shown in the drawings, is of sufficient size to allow the clamping-block to turn thereon. These blocks are located above the spring, and they are faced with leather or other suitable material, as shown at 9", to prevent marring the surface of the door or other article to be held thereby. The normal space between the clamping-blocks is sufficient to receive a door edgewise, (see Fig. 1,) and as pressure in a downward direction is applied to the door the members turn on their hinge and the clamping-blocks are thrown toward each other and made to grasp the door tightly. These blocks at the same time adjust themselves to the surface of the door on opposite sides.

When the device is not in use, it may be folded into small compass by first turning the right-hand block (referring to Fig. 3) sufficiently to allow the free extremity of the spring 7 to pass to a position between the blocks as the feet 5 are moved toward each other. These feet may then be grasped by one hand and the device easily carried.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A floor-vise comprising two twin members hinged together at their inner or adjacent extremities, and a leaf-spring attached to one member and passing over the hinge to engagement with the opposite member, whereby the central part of the two members is normally spring-supported above the surface upon which their outer extremities or feet rest, a space being left'between their inner extremities above the hinge, and cooperating clamping-blocks pivotally mounted on their inner extremities which are recessed to allow said blocks to swing and adjust themselves to the surface of the article to be held.
