Description
w. E. LALLEYQ WINDOW LOCK. APPLICATION HLED mm 29. 19m.
1 ,285,249. Patented Nov. 19, 1918.
UNITED STATES PATENT onnion WILLIAM n LALIjnY, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON: v a
WINDOW-Loon.
To all whom it may concern:
, of the window sash.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. LALLEY, a citizen of the United States, residingtat Seattle, in the county 'of'King, State of l/Vashington, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in. Window-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to; be a full, clear, and eXactdescription of the in- Vention,,such as will enable vothers'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a window sash fastener, and more particularly to the class of sash locks. l
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character. wherein both-the upper and lower sashes of the window can be securely fastened atlthe inside thereof, so as to hold the sashes-closed with-v out the, possibility of theopening of the window'from the outside thereof, yet itisto be understoodthat these sashes can belocked or fastened in open position 'atany desirable degree for ventilating purposes, thus, it being seen that the sashes oan'loe locked in any desired position. I
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock ofithis character wherein the members or latches for both the upper and lower sashes can be simultaneously operated in unison therebyeliminating the necessity of manipulating both latches independent of each other, the lock being of novel form to assure the firm and secure fastening ,A fUI'thBIi ObjBCtFOf the invention is the provision of a'lockiofthis character which is st'rong,; simple and inexpensive to -manuface ture and also can be readily, applied toany window of common .formbf construction; With these and aother objects ;in iview,.the invention consistsnin ithe "features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fullydescribed, illustrated in the accompanying Idrawing.
and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended;
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a window casing and portions of the upper and lower sashes of a window with the lock constructed in accordance with the invention applied;
Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view through the lock; 1

3 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof; i
'Fig. 4: is a top plan view;
' F igu 5: is an edge elevation. c Similanreference characters indicate cor-. responding "parts throughout the several views in the drawing, a
Referring to the drawing in detail,; A designates'a window frame of the ordinary well 'known construction within which is 'slidably disposed in the usual manner, a lower sashlO' and an upper sash 11, while formed at a slight elevation above the meet ingrails ofthese sashes in the Window frame A atthe side thereof is a hole 12, and likewise formed in the vertical stile of theupper sash 11 at one' side thereof is'a hole 13, and
in these holes is adaptedato engage the latches of {the lock hereinafter; fully de scribed.
The lock comprises a. base plate '14 which maybe of any desirable shape and is preferably made, from metal having formed thereon at right angles to 'eachother opposingj'pairs' ofpivot ears 15 and 16 respec tively,"the ears beinglocated preferably at the left hand end portion of the base plate 1% and swinginglyvmounted between the pairs of ears are the latch members 17 and" 18 respectiv'ely, eachbeing formedwith a bill19 forengageinentin the 11016112 or 13 as will be apparent; The latch members are supported for swinging movement upon pivots 20 which are mounted transversely in the pivot ears. iT'he latchf mem'ber117-is "formed with a ha'ndrlever 21 at itspivotgend and extending substantially; at right angles thereto, while the latch member jlSz is forinjed wit h' a" tail piece: i22iwhich is at !substantially right angles to' 'rtheu memberl 18 "and inthe upper edge thereof T is formed a notch or recess 23 for accommodating "ahand lever 21, the notch'orrecess being: designed to 'serve as a seat therefor. The hand lever-21 bridges the tail piece 22, and active upon this tail piece ea n a leaf spring24 which at-t'he end thereof is suitably riveted or otherwise secured to the base plate 14 at the top face thereof. ,The spring 24 is designed to act upon the tail piece 22 which in its turn acts upon the hand lever 21 so as to force the latch members 17 and 18 into positive locking engagement in the holes 12 and 13 in the upper sash and window frame respectively,
is that so that in this manner both the loci: ant upper sashes Will be firmly held test in he WlDClOW trams to prevent the opening thereof from Without,
At one side of the pair of pivot ears 16 pivotally mounted upon the base plate let, a dog vrhich is formed with a suitable nose extension 26 and" on the swinging ot' the dog 2:) in a direction to bring the nose extension 26 beneath the tail piece of the latch member 18 the same i'ill. be held against unlatching and likewise the relationship of the hand lever 21 bridging the tail piece .2 will hold the latch member 17 against unlatchii On retrograde movement of the dog 14") the latch members 1'? and 18 will be freed for the manual manipulation of the hand lever 521 to enable the unlatching oi the sashes, and will be ap parent that but a single operation is required for simultaneous actuating both of the latch members to hing the same to re leasing position, The sprinj 2% active upon the latch members avill simultaneously more the same to latching position on releasing the hand "from the hand lever 21. it Will also be apparent that on closing the sashes the latch members ll and 18 will automatically engage in the holes 12 and 13 for the latching of said dashes.
The holes 12 and 13 in the Window frame and upper are of size to accommodatethe bills 19 of the latch members 17 and 18,
It is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the loci; such as come properly Within the scope oi the appended claims without departing from the spirit oi the invention or securing" any of its advantages.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and the manner of operation of "he look will be clearly understood, and thcretw :v a. more extended explanation has been omitted.
ll 'hat is claimed is:
l. in a window sash loch, a base, latch members su'ingingly supported upon base at substantially right angles to each other and adapted to engage an upper sash and the window: frame when the base is carried by a lovver sash so to lock both of sad sashes, and a hand lever operative upon one ot the latch members and active for moving said latch members simultaneously With each other.
E3. in a WillClOW sash look, a base, latching. members sivingingly supported upon the base at substantially right angles to each other and adapted to engage an upper sash and the Window frame when the base is carried by a lower sash so as to lock both or said sasoes, a hand lever operative upon one of the latch members and active tor moving said latch members simultaneously vvith each other, and a dog cooperative lwith one ot the latch members to positively lock both members against movement.
In a Window sash look, a base, latching JliGDllJOlS swinging-l supported upon the base at substantially right angles to each other and adapted to engage an upper sash and toe n'indon frame when the base is carried by a lower sash so as to lock both of said sashes, a hand lever operative upon one of the latch members and active for moving said latch members simultaneously with each other, a dog cooperative With one of the latch members to positively loci: both members against movement, and means cooperating with the latch members to move the same in positive locking position.
l. in a lock ot'the character described, a base, a pair of locking members swingingly supported upon the base at substantially at right angles to each other, a tail piece formed on one of the latch members, a hand lever termed on the other latch member and bridging the tail piece, and a leaf spring active upon the tail piece tor the movement of the latch members simultaneously .With each other into positive locking position.
5. a loci: of the character described, a base, a pair of locking members sivingingly supported upon the base at substantially right. angles to each other, a tail piece termed on one of the latch members, a hand lever termed on the other latch member and bridging the tail piece, a leaf spring" active upon the tail piece for the movement of the latch members SllQUll-RllEOtlSlf, vvith each other into positive locking position, and means on the base and engageable with the tail piece to hold the latch members in locked position,
In testimony whereof, atlii; my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
