SUPERHEATER FOR MARINE BOILERS.
reeaesi.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1917. Serial No. 164,116.
To'all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WALTER F. KEENAN, J12, and DAVID D. THOMAS, both citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at New York, in the county and State of New York, and at Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Superheaters for Marine Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Certain forms of marine boilers are provided with air heater tubes, which generally described, are tubes in the flue or stack through which pass the heated products of combustion and which are utilized to impart-heat to the air for combustion forced around them and carried by means 'of ducts to the furnace. Boilers equipped with this device have certainpeculiarities of construction which have to be taken into consideration in case it be desired to add to them a steam superheater. I
This problem we have solved by the construction and arrangement of a superheater upon which is based our present application andwhich, in general terms, may be described as -a superheater extending entirely across the uptake between the boiler and I the air heater tubes, and supported from a vertical partition. wall in the rear .part of the uptake at such a distance from the boiler tube sheet as to form a passage from the air heater tube chamber to the fire box. The front of the superheater is secured to the front wall of the uptake or to a plate secured over an opening therein. p
This general, plan of construction and the details of construction necessary for carrying it into efl'ect are shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a boiler equipped with our improvement.
Fig. 2 is a part elevation and part crosssectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the means of supporting the superheater elements from the aforesaid partition.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of a part of a supporting plate secured to said partition.
he boiler represented is one adapted to tubes A, a furnace B, and a chamber 0 for,
the products of combustion from which they pass through the tubes A to the uptake D.
Between the latter and the stack are a series of air heater tubes E through which the waste products of combustion pass, and these are arranged in a compartment or passage F through which air is drawn or forced over or around the hot tubes and directed Patented ocaeaisie.
through 'the passage G into the inclosed' space H, from which it is forcedthrough adjustable doors or dampers K into the furnace. This is a well known type of boiler and is modified. to meet the requirements of the present invention only in the provision of the supporting diaphragm or plate L for the rear ends of the su erheater. The superheater, preferably 0 the now well known Foster type, is located in the uptake above the boiler tubes and beneath the air heater, tubes, and extends across subbolts P passing through the brackets and angle platesRon the said plate N. This sup ports the rear end of the superheater and protects the bends from the direct action of the hot gases.
The ends of the' superheater tubes at the front pass through the wall of the uptake into a compartment S where they are connected with the headers T or cross connections V. j
The details of the structure as a whole are not shown further than is necessary to illustarte the general plan of construction and operation of the samefa'nd the part played by the superheater.
The special means for securing the latter in position by the slotted plate at one end and the wall of the uptake at the other so that the ends of any element may be disconnected from the wall and the plate removed to release the bends, is not claimed in this application as a part of our invention.
What we claim v 1. In a steam boiler equipped with air heater tubes in its flue, the combination with the said tubes of a partition or diaphragm secured in the flue at such distance from the rear wall as to form a passageway for the heated air to pass on its way to the fire box, a plate removably secured to brackets and in proximity to such par-.
tition, and a superheater, the bends of the straight tubes of which are supported in slots in the said plate and the front ends of which pass through the flue wall, the said tubes extending entirely across the flue under the air heater tubes and in line with the greater dimension of the space therefor, as set forth.
2. In a steam boiler equipped with air heater tubes in its flue, the combination with the said tubes of a partition or diaphragm secured in the flue at such a distance from the rear wall as to form a passage-way for the heated air to pass on its way to the fire 20 box, brackets secured to said partition; a plate removably secured to said brackets,
and a superheater the tubes of which extend across the flue, having its bends at the 1 rear supported in slots in said plate and its 25 WALTER r. KEENAN, JR. DAVID n. frHoMAs,
