COMBINATION MATCH-BOX AND HANGER.
Application filed January 25, 1918. Serial No. 213,767.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THURLOW W. STOFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Match- Boxes and Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in combination match boxes and hangers particularly adapted for use in kitchens, houses Or the like, and which is formed from a single blank provided with a match holding trough and box supporting pad.
Another object of this invention is to provide a receptacle formed of a single blank to provide a suitable match container and equipped with a novel outwardly movable trough which is held in closed position by a locking flap struck from the blank.
Another object of this invention is to provide a receptacle of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle closed and ready for shipment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the receptacle ready to be hung up and its trough in match holding position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank showing the outer side thereof.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the receptacle in its entirety and it consists of a single blank of suitable material having suitable lines of scoring 6 and 7 which form a rear wall 8. The portion of the blank on opposite sides of the lines of scoring 6 and 7 form side walls 9 and 10 and the said walls are bent at right angles to the rear wall 8. The side wall 9 has a strip of adhesive 11 formed on its exterior side adj acent the point of juncture of the said wall with the rear wall. The side wall 10 has Specification of Letters Patent.
formed integral with its free vertical edge a front wall 12 which is bent at right angles theretoon the line of scoring 13. The lower end of the front wall terminates adjacent the lower end of the said side wall. and is provided centrallyv with an inverted V- shaped cut-out portion 14. The free vertical edge of the front wall has formed thereon an auxiliary side wall 15 which is foldable on the line of scoring 16. The side walls 10 and 15 each have their upper and lower ends extended to provide top and bottom flaps 17, said flaps being foldable on the lines of scoring 18. The lower end of the rear wall has formed thereon a bottom wall 19 which is foldable on the'line of scoring 20. The free lower edge of the bottom wall is extended to provide the front wall 21 of the trough. The sides of the trough are extended to provide the wings or lips 22, whichflwings' are adapted to be fitted against the inner sides of the walls 9 and 10, respectively, when the said walls are folded.
The front wall 21 is foldable on the line of scoring 23 and the wings or lips are foldable on the lines of scoring 24.
A suitable adhesive 25 is formed upon the outer side of the bottom 19 to permit the lower flaps of the side walls 10 and 15 to be sealed thereto w hen assembled.
The upper end of the rear wall 8 is extended to provide a supporting tongue 26 which is provided with a fastener receiving opening 27 at its apex. The tongue is foldable on the line of scoring 28. The flaps 17 are each provided in one corner with a fastener receiving opening 29 through which a. suitable fastener 30 is adapted to extend.
The front wall is provided at the apex of the cut-out portion with-a pair of spaced vertical slits 31 which define a locking member 32. The locking member 32 is adapted to engage the upper edge of the trough member when it is folded against the front wall to hold the same against accidental outward movement. The lines of scoring 13 and 16 are severed at the lower portion thereof to provide slots 33 which slots permit the wings 22 to be fitted against the inner side of the side walls when the box or receptacle is assembled.
In use, the blank is first folded on the lines of scoring (3 and 7 thus forming the side walls 9 and 10; the blank is then folded on the line of scoring 13 to provide the front wall 12. The auxiliarv side wall 15 is then 19 is then folded on the line of scoring 20.
and the trough is folded on the line of scon ing 23 which folding permits the wings or lips 22 to be inserted through the slot 33 against the inner side of the side walls 9 and 10, and thus the receptacle is formed. The bottom flaps 17 are then'folded on the line of scoring 18 against the outer side of the bottom wall 19 and sealed to the adhesive thereon. The trough is forced inwardly until the wall 21 engages the lower portion of the front wall 12 and the locking flap 32 is then arranged over the upper edge of the trough wall 21, thus holding this Wall against accidental outward movement.
When it is desired to use the box it is only necessary torelease the supporting tongue 26 and extend the same upwardly and permit it to be suspended upon a suit-- means articles can readily run down into the trough and be easily removed therefrom.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A receptacle of the class described formed of a single blank including a rear wall, side walls formed integrally with the opposite edges of the rear wall, a bottom wall, a trough including a front and side .walls formed integrally with the free lower end of the bottom. wall, a supporting tongue formed integrally with the upper end of the rear wall, a front wall formed integrally with the free edge of one side wall, an auxiliary side wall formed integrally with the free edge of the front wall, one of said side walls and auxiliary wall having their upper and lower ends extended'to provide sealing flaps, and the lower edge of the front Wall provided with an inverted cut-out portion which is adapted to be located in spaced relation to the front wall of the trough when assembled, and a locking flap formed integrally with and struck from the frontwall and adapted to engage the upper edge of the front wall of the trough to retain the same in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THURLOW W. STOFER.
