DISPLAY CARTON Jan. 10, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Oct. 13. 1952 INVENTOR. (*az DISPLAY CARTON" Merrill 1. Coe, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland; Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application October 13, 1952, Serial No. 314,429 8 Claims. (Cl. 206545.26)
This invention relates to improvements in a display carton.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a display carton for merchandise in which the merchandise is effectively protected when thecarton is closed and one which maybe quickly and easily adjusted to a forwardly inclined display position.
Second, to provide a display carton formed of an integral blank and having an easel member which may be quickly and easily adjusted to erected position. and-.is securely retained in erected position.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevational view of a carton embodying my invention with the parts in display position, the cover being shown by dotted lines in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear perspective view of the carton in closed position.
Fig. 4 is a top perspective view with the cover in open position and with the easel erected.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the car ton is formed.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a partially folded blank illustrating the relation of the parts and the steps of forming the carton, certain adhesive areas being indicated.
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing further steps in the erecting of the carton.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is formed of an integral blank cut and scored to provide a bottoml, side walls 2., 2 hingedly connected to the side edges of the bottom at 3, a front wall 4 hingedly connectedto the front edge of the bottom at 5, and an outer rear wall 6 hingedly connected to the bottom at 7. The side walls are provided with cover fiap extensions 8 hingedly joined thereto at 9. The side walls have diagonal scores 10 therein extending from their lower corners diagonally outward and through the cover flaps fi. This provides folding flaps 11 which function as will be laterpointed out. The front wall 4 is provided with corner flaps 12 hingedly connected thereto at 13 and adhesively secured to the front folding flaps 11 of the side walls, adhesive being indicated at 14 (see Fig. 6).
The side walls 2 have inner wall members IS'hingedly connected thereto at 16, these inner rear wall members being disposed in overlapping relation on the inner sides of the outer rear wall and adhesively secured to each other, adhesive being indicated at 17. The inner wall members are adhesively secured to the outer rear wall at 13. With the parts thus arranged'the side walls may be collapsed inwardly upon the bottom with the front and rear walls superimposed thereon.
' .-The cover 19 is hingedly connected to the upper 'e'dgeof the outer rear wall at 2e and is provided'with a'cl'o'sure' 2,730,232 Patented Jan. 10, 1956 22; The cover'is transversely scored at 23 intermediatev its ends to permit folding to display position as shownin Figs. 1" and. 2. The folding score 23 is positioned so that when the cover between. the front-wall. and the front end edges 24 of the cover flaps 8. The diagonal scores 10 extending through the cover flaps 8 permit collapsing of the side walls when the cover flaps are folded outwardly into the planes of the side walls. The cover flaps when folded inwardly into cover supporting position lock the side walls against collapsinginwardly.
To position the cover in display position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is folded on the score line- 23 and its swinging end tucked between the rear end edges 25 of the cover flaps 8 and the rear walls. This effectively holds the cover in display position. The cover is commonly provided with suitable advertising material, legends or informative matter.
The easel member designated generally by the numeral 26 is formed integrally with the outer rear wall and thebottom. The easel member is defined by the vertical slits 27 in the rearwall and connected at their upper ends by the horizontal slit 23 and extended into the outwardly diverging slits- 29 in the bottom. The easel member is hingedly connected to the bottom at 30. The slits 27 and 28 are joined by outwardly curved portions 31 which formtabs 32 on the easel member which tabs are slidable between the inner and outer rear walls as is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To facilitate adjustment and to provide a supporting lug, the easel portion of the rear wall has an upwardly curved segmental slit 331 as is shown in Figs. 3 and 5 therein defining the lug 33 which is engaged with the lower edges of the rear walls as shown in Fig. 2 when the easel is erected. The slit 32 also facilitates adjustment of the easel to erected position as it may be deflected inwardly, at the same time deflecting the portion 34 of the easel member formed from the outer rear wall inwardly so that the tabs 32 may be readily moved downwardly as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This downward movement is continued until the tip of the lug 33 passes the lower edges of the rear walls when it is further deflected inwardly.
'f The score 7 hingedly connecting the outer rear wall to the bottom constitutes the foot of the easel member when itis in erected position asshown in Figs. 1. and 2. In the embodiment illustrated the portion 35 of the easel member formed from the bottom has a forwardly facing U-shaped slit 36 therein defining a tongue 37 which extends into the opening resulting from the adjustment of the easel to erected position. I
With the parts thus arranged they may be formed of an integral blank, the blank glued and folded to knocked down position by machines and quickly set up for use. I have not attempted to illustrate and describe other embodiinents and adaptations as. it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
