Be it known that I, FRANK C. SANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which 7 and eoni'binations of parts'hereiiiafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanving drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan viewrof a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; 7 Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig.1;

Referring more in detail to the draw ings, the numeral 1 designates the base formed with a longitudinal chamber or groove 2 and side flanges 3. A fixed jaw 4 is arranged at one end of the base for cooperation with the movable jaw 5 which is slidably connected 7 t0 the base by detachable plates 6 that engage beneath the flanges 3 and constitute therewith a dovetail connection, as depicted in Fig. 4. Now, by swinging the cam lever 21, formed on the eccentric 14, backwardly, the latter will give the movable jaw the final tightening movement to securely and firmly grip the work. To release the work it is only essential to swing the lever in either direction toward the jaws, such swinging action turning the eccentric in the slide bearing to both slide the latter in its guideway and also shift itrto effectadjustment of the movable jaw from whatever position it has been given by the screw adjustment. once being setby the screw shaft th'e cain adjustment will be the only one required to be operated while working on a like stock 'of work. A vise comprising a base having a fixed aw at one end and formed in its upper face with an elongatedchamber, a screw shaft journaled in the base at each end of the chamber and disposed lengthwise within the latter, an adjustable jaw slidably connected to the base for movement toward and away from the fixed jaw and provided with a transverse guideway having a crosswise slot registering with the chamber, a nut mounted within the chamber on the threads of the shaft for being moved by rotating the latter, a stub shaft carried by the nut and extending through the slot of the movable jaw, a cam lever journaled on the stub shaft and provided with an eccentric, a slide bearing slidable in the, transverse guideway and formed with an opening to receive the eccentric, and means for securing the slide bearing in its guideway and the eccentric to the stub shaft.

A vise comprising a base having a fixed jaw at one end and formed in its upper face with an elongated chamber, a screw shaft journaled in the base at each end of the chamber and disposed lengthwise ithin the latter, an adjustable aw slidably connected to the base for movement toward and-away from the fixed jaw and provided with a transverse guideway having a crosswise slot registering with the chamben'a nut mounted within the chamber on the threads of the shaft for being moved by rotating the latter, a stub shaft carried by the nut and extendingthrough the slot of the movable jaw, a cam lever journaled on the stub shaft and provided with an eccentric, and means slidable in the transverse guideway and formed with an opening to receive the eccentric.

In a vise,'a base having an elongated chamber, a threaded shaft journaled in the base lengthwise of the chamber, a stub shaft threaded at its outer end and having its inner end integrally connected to a nut, said nut being mounted on the shaft for advancement within the chamber'when the shaft is" rotated, an adjustable jaw slidable on the base over its chamber and formed with a slot extending lengthwise of the latter to receive the upwardly projecting stub shaft, a cam lever ournaled on the stub shaft and provided with an eccentric for shifting the jaw, and a nut secured on the upper threaded end of the stub to hold the cam lever thereon.
