COMBINATION-V1813.
Application filed August 1,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I'IARRY GnRnANow, a citizen of the United States, and r sidentof Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combinetion-Vises. of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to vises and an object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable structure which may be readily used with a drill press, a milling machine, a surface grinder and similar apparatus. Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary clamp which may be employed for clamping a work piece in engagement with the two jaws of the vise. Still another objectof the invention is to provide avise with an angle plate on which the work may be clamped and held at any desired angle.
To these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: c
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vise embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the'vise;
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the manner of connecting the screw with the movable jaw of the vise;
Fig. 4 is a side View of the vise;
Fig. 5 is a detail end view showing the angle plate;
Fig. 6 is a detail View of the auxiliary clamp;
Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the manner in which the movable jaw cooperates with the guiding grooves in the sides of the base;
Fig. 8 is a detail View showing the manner in which the auxiliary clamp cooperates with the sides of the base; and
Fig. 9 is a detail View showing the manner in which the securing plates cooperate with the grooves in the sides of the base.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the base which is in the form of a casting having also two upwardly extending integral projections 3 and 4 at Specification of Letters Patent.

acts as a stationary jaw and extends beyond opposite sides of the base, its inner face ha vmg a face plate 5 secured thereto as by one 1 or more bolts 6.
Cooperating with the stationary jaw 4. is a movable aw 7 which is guided on the base 1 between the stationary jaw 4 and the projection 3. The guiding of the movable jaw T is preferably effected by planing the top face of the base 1 between the projections 3 and a and planing the sides of the base 1 above grooves extending along the sides of the base. The movable jaw cooperates with these guide surfaces and extends downwardly at 8 on opposite sides of the base. Retaining plates 9 are bolted at 10 to the under sides of the downwardly extending sides of the movable jaw and project into the grooves to cooperate with the faces 11 of said grooves. The movable jaw projects from opposite sides of the base like the stationary jaw and is also provided with a face plate indicated at 12. This face plate preferably has at opposite sides, vertically arranged grooves or recesses 13 so that a circular body 14; may be clamped in the vertical jaws between the jaws on either side of the base as is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Movement of the movable jaw may be effected by a screw 15 which is mounted to turn in the projection 3 by means of a handle 16 and has its inner end journaled in the movable jaw. This journaling is preferably effected by providing a cylindrical portion 17 on the end of the screw and a cylindrical bearing 18 in the movable jaw 7. The cylindrical portion 17 is also provided with an annular groove 19, and a plate 20 is secured by a bolt 21 to the movable jaw 7 so as to project into the groove 19 to hold the screw against axial movement in the bearing 18 while permitting the turning movement of the screw.
There may be associated with the vise an angle plate comprising in this instance a table portion 22 on which the work is clamped in any suitable manner. This table portion has a depending flange 23 at one side which by a bolt 24, is secured to the outer face of the stationary jaw 4:, said outer face being suitably planed to cooperate with plate in its adjusted position. The top face of the table 22 may be formed with a groove (see Fig. 9).
er in which the cylindrical work may be secured. I
The vise as a whole may be secured to a table or a drill press or the bed of any other suitable machine by means of securing plates 25, each of which is formed with a slot 26 through which the securing bolt 27 is passed to anchor the securing device to a bed 28 This securing device has a downwardly turned end 29 for engagement with the bed and an end 30 for engagement with the bottom wall 31 of a groove in the side of the base of the vise. By engaging f this securing device with the bottom wall 7 of the groove in the vice base there 1s no cutting of the guiding surface for the mo vable aw.
, Combined with the vise is an auxiliary clamp which operates between the stationary and movable jaws and cooperates with the base. This auxiliary clamp, in this instance, comprises a substantially U shaped member 32 carrying a clamp screw 33 and having its ends 34: turned inwardly to coooperate with a wall 35 of each of" the grooves in the sides of the base. The grooves are provided adjacent the stationary jaw 4: with lateral upwardly opening recesses 36 through which the ends of the auxiliary clamp 32 are permitted toenter the grooves. The auxiliary clamp is adapted to hold a work piece 36 7 (see Fig. 4) in engagement with the top of the stationary jaw i and the movable jaw 7, these jaws being provided with V shaped notches 37 in order that cylindrical work pieces maybe held against turning. The clamping screw 33 bears against the work piece 36 and holds the work piece firmly against the jaws at and 7 while atthe same time drawing the ends of the clamp firml against the surfaces 35 in the groove. t will be noted that the surfaces 35 are independent of the guide surfaces 11 and in this way the clamp does not injure the guide surfaces for the movable jaw. It will also be noted that the vise securing devices 23 bear against the lower walls of the grooves and do not injure the guide surfaces 11 for themovable jaw of the vise.
What I'claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A vise comprising a base, a pair of relatively movable clamping jaws on the base,
and an auxiliary clamp-removably held to the base between the jaws and projecting above the jaws to securely clamp an article on the top faces of the jaws.
2. A vise comprising a base, a pair of relatively movable clamping jaws on the base,
4:. A vise comprising a base, a pair of relatively movable clamping jaws on the base. and an auxiliary clamping frame projecting above the jaws and adjustable longitudinally of the base to operate between the jaws for the purpose of clamping an article against the top faces of the jaws; I
5. A vise comprising a base having grooves along opposite sides, a pair of relatively adjustable clamping jaws on the base, a U shaped clamping frame proj ecting above the jaws and having its ends adjustable in the grooves, and a clamping screw carried by said clamping frame to clamp an article against the top faces of the jaws.
6. A vise comprising a base having guide grooves along opposite sides,'each formed with two guides, a stationaryjaw-projecting upwardly from the base and having in its top a central notch parallel with the guide grooves, a movable jaw slidable on one of the guides of each groove, the top of-the movable jaw having a central notch alined with the central notch of the stationary jaw, a
U clamp having each leg slidable on the HARRY GERMANOW.
