FIGURE TOY.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
Application filed December 23, 1916. Serial No. 138,671.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Josmrr IsAAos, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britian, residing at Highgate Park Works, Alcester street, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, manufacturer, have invented a certain new or Improved Figure Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a toy, comprising or involving a representation of an animal, human figure, or the like, having its base or lower part of such form that it is adapted to stand in a vertical or substantially vertical position, and in which the body or a part thereof is of a springy character adapted to contract and expand vertically or longitudinally yof the body.
This invention further comprehends a toy, comprising or involving a representation of an animal, human lgure, or the like, involving a coiled spring, said spring being provided with or formed to constitute a base at its lower extremity, and having a head combined with its upper extremity, the head being of a character such that upon release of the spring after it has been-compressed downwardly, the head is enabled by inertia to raise the entire toy from the surface upon which it is placed.
Suitable projecting flexible arms are attached to the cover or other suitable part, while similar flexible projections are attached, as for instance to the base to form feet.
The whole arrangement is such that upon the application of repeated downward impacts upon the head of the animal or figure, the figure is caused to have a jumping action which produces a noise by the contact of the lat face of the wooden disk or base against the table or surface upon which it is being operated, somewhat similar to that of a clog dance.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawing, which illustrates one form of toy according to the present invention.
In a convenient embodiment of this invention, the base is formed of a flat wooden disk a provided around its upper circumference with a rabbet b in which the end coil c of a coiled spring d is xed, as for instance by means of suitable stap-les, the edge e oi the disk being conveniently formed to a rounded section. The coiled spring d which forms the body of the figure is preferably of lesser diameter at the top than at the base, and a. suitablev stuffed head 7 representing that of a rabbit, bear, human flgure, or other device being combined with the top of the spiral spring d; The spiral spring is covered with any suitable flexible material g, such as imitation fur, skin, or plush in the case of those articles of animal formation. One .convenient method of combining the head with the spring isv to secure the head to the upper part of the covering g. The arms t are stuffed and are secured to the covering material g in suchra manner that the arms normally stand in an open position. If desired, either o-r both the head and the arms may be secured to the upper part of the spring, while two feet z' formed of flexible material are secured to the wooden disk a, the lower coil of the spiral, or the covering g, so as to project out hori` zontally from the base of the body.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A figure toy including the representation of an animal, human ligure or the like, a base plate, a spiral spring having one of its ends secured to said base plate, its opposite end being attached to the head of the figure, which head is suitably weighted whereby when the `spring is compressed and released the figure will be, due to the inertia of the head, caused to be raised from the surface upon which the base plate rests.
In testimony whereof I ailx my signature in presence or" two witnesses.
JosmH rsAAos.
