ROBERT W.VA1\T Benetton WHITE rnams, NEW YORK;
GARMENT-PRESSING m'ivion.
Specification of LettersI-atent. Patented Aug. 13, 1918 Application filed October 11, 1917. ,1 Serial No. 195,944.
To all whomz't may concern} t Be it known that I, ROBERT W. V N BUBEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence street, White Plains, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Pressing Devices, of which the following is a specification. t t
This invention relates to apparel apparatus and ha more especial reference to a garment pressing device.
The invention has for its principal object to, provide a device for receiving trousers and pressing the same in order that they will be properly shaped in a manner toprevent injury to the fabric.
Another object of the invention is to provide a deviceof the character mentioned having novel clamping means, the same serving to prevent wrinkling of the trousers during the pressing thereof and insuring proper stretching of the same during the pressing operation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a garment pressing device that may be folded into compact form when not in use and laced in a limited or confined space.
The oregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of, imparting a full understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings M t Figure 1 is a planview of the device when in open position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when in closed'positiom. i l r Fig. 3 is ayvertical, transverse section therethrough; v 1
Fig. lisa fragmentary detail in section showing the connection between the pressing leaves and the body portion of the device; i r
Fig. 5 is a similar section;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail inperspective of one of the keepers or cars formed on the body portion of the device;
Fig. 7' is a fragmentary side elevation of the device; and I 1 i boards or leaves 4 having similar ears 5 formed upon the adjacent marginal edges thereof can be hingedly connected to the sectional body portion 1, it of coursebeing understood that bearing pins are passed through the alined leaves or cars formed on the leavesi and the sections of the body 1. Rolled flanges 6 are formed upon the inclined marginal edges of the sections of the body portion 1 and inorder that the leaves 4. may be swung past the same,recessed portions 7 are formed therein. Other; rolled flanges orears 8 are formed upon the opposite marginal edges' of the sections of the body portion 1 and as will be noted, some of the same are wider than others, the purl pose of which will be subsequently apparent. Seatsor notches 9 are formed in the marginal edges of certain of the rolled flanges 8 and serve as means for permitting positive connection with turn buttons 10 pivotally mounted uponthe pressing leaves 4; adjacent the free extremities thereof.
Bowed spring clamps 11 are pivotally selcuredfto the outer faces of thepressing leaves 4 and are adapted tohave the opposite ends of the same engaged beneath the rolled flanges 6 and the oppositely disposed rolled flanges 8. Obviously, by engaginglthe spring clamps 11 with the flanges 6 and 8 the pressing leaves 4 will be positively and yieldably maintained in engagement with the trousers arranged in the device. ti
Apertured bearing lugs 12 areformed integral with thesides of the body portion 1 at points in proximity to the opposite extremities thereof and pivotally supported in the curved slotted bearings thereof are arms ,13 and 14, it being noted that the arm 14L is of less length than the arm 13 inorder that .portion ofthe said device.
the same shallconform to-thetaperof the body portion 1. Depressions 15 areformed in the intermediateportions of the arm 13.
and serve as means for allowing the side seams of the trousers to be received-thereby. Finger pieces 16 may be and preferably are formed integral with the; said arms 13 and 14 and, obviously, serve as means whereby the same may be swung into and out of engagement with trousers arranged in the device. Due to the peculiar form of the curved slotted bearings, it will be readily understood thatthe clamping arms 13 and 14 may be adjusted to different heights, thus, compensating for different sizes of the trousers. Those portions of the body as arranged beneath the clamping arms'13 and 14 are serrated or scored as at 17 and serve to prevent the slipping or undue movement of the extremities of the'trousers during the engagement of the clamping arms 13and 14 therewith. It is to be noted, that by swinging the clamping arms 13 and 14 downwardly into engagement with the adjacent portions of tlie tro'u'sers arranged in the device, the same will be securely clamped onto the body Further, by swinging the clampingarms 13 and 14 outwardly,'the trousers maybe slightly stretched to a greater extent.
To permit the securing of the device to suitable supports, such as the drawer of a wardrobe or the like, a plurality of openings generally indicated by the numeral 18 are formed in the sectional body portion 1 and will permit the passage of screws or like fastening devices" therethrough. A larger opening 19 is formed in the reduced portion of the body 1 and permits the device to be engaged with a hook or other support when it is desired and folded into compact form. In operation, the trousers are properly folded and placed upon the sectional body portion 1, whereupon the pressing leaves 4 are swung thereover and the spring clamps 11 and buttons 10 properly adjusted to cause positive engagement of the said leaves with the trousers. If desired, thetrousers may be dampened at points in' proximity of the creases therein, thus, facilitating the reshaping of the same. Previous to the engagement of the pressing leaves 4 with the trous'ers,the clamping arms. 13.and 14 are engaged with thesame, thus, stretching them and insuring proper reshaping thereof Without causing injury to the fabric. Should the trousers be' constructed from exceedingly heavy material or more than one pair of trousers arranged in the device, the clamping arms 13 and 14 may be adjusted in the curved slotted bearingsof the lugs 12 accordingly. 1
copies of this patent maybe; obtained for portion and arranged transversely of the same.
2. A garment pressing device including a hingedly connected sectional body portion, leaves hinged to said body portion, clamping means carried by the leaves and engageable with the body portion, and arms pivotally engaged with the body portion and arranged transversely of the same.
3. A garment pressing device, including a foldable'bodyportion, leaves hinged to, said body portion,'resilient clamping means carried by the leaves and engageable with the body portion, lugs formed integral with the body portion adjacent the opposite extremities thereof having curved bearing slots formed in the same, and arms pivotally engaged in said slots and disposed transversely of the body portion.
4. A garment pressingdevice, including a body portion, leaves hinged to said body portion, springclamping means carried by the leaves and engageable with the body portion, rotatable buttons carried by said leaves and engageable with the body portion, arms pivotally engaged with the body portion at points in proximity of the opposite extremities thereof, those portions of the body adjacent the arms being serrated, as and for the purpose set forth.
5'. A garment pressing device, including a bodypportion. having rolled flanges formed upon the opposite marginal edges thereof, leaves hinged to said body portion, sprin clamping means carried by the leaves an engageable under said rolled flanges, and
arms pivotally engaged with the body portion at points in proximity of the opposite extremities thereof and arranged transversely of the same, said arms having depressions formed in the intermediate portions thereof. 1
6. A garment pressing device, including a hingedly connected sectional body, rolled flanges formed upon the opposite marginal edges of said body, leaves hinged to the body, spring clamping means carried by the leaves engageable under said rolled flanges, adjustable arms pivotally engaged with the body portion at points in proximity of the opposite extremities of the same, said arms having depressions formed in the intermediate portions thereof.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
