FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 18, 1917. Serial No. 181,346.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER ROTH, a cltizen of the United States, residing at New Salem, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in FruitJar Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fruit jar holders and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder of simple and durable structure which is adapted to securely retain a jar against turning during the operation of removing the top or cover from the same, the parts being so arranged as to protect the hands of the operator by preventing them from being out by coming in contact with the top while the same is being unscrewed from the jar.
lVith this object in view the holder comprises a pliable met-allicband adapted to be placed around the body of the jar, the said band being provided at its inner surface with a rubber or elastic strip adapted to have contact with the surface of the jar whereby the band is held against slipping with relation to the same. Semi-cylindrical handles are attached to the ends of the band and the ends of the said handles are connected with a U-shaped spring strip. Blocks are secured in the intermediate portions of the handles and are adapted to have contact with each other when the handles are brought together thus preventing the said handles from being crushed or distorted when the device is in use.

The jar holder comprises a pliable band 1 of sheet metal which is adapted to be placed around the body of a jar. A strip 2 of rubber or similar material is attached to the inner surface of the band 1 and is adapted to have contact with the periphery of the jar whereby the holder is prevented from slipping with'relation to the jar when in operation, Semi-cylindrical handles 3 are attached at one end to the ends of the band 1 and normally converge toward each other. The intermediate portions ofthe handles 3 are filled with blocks 1 preferably of wood and the blocks are adapted to come in contact with each other when the device is in use thus preventing the handles from being crushed or distorted. The ends of the handles 3 opposite those ends which are connected with the band 1 are connected together by means of resilient U-shaped metallic strips 5. The said strip 5 is under tension with a tendency to normally hold the ends of the handles 3 which are connected with the band 1 spaced from each other.
In operation the band 1 is placed around the body of a jar and the handles 3 are grasped and forced toward each other whereby the strip 2 is brought in frictional contact with the surface of the jar and the blocks 1 are brought together. Thus the jar is held against turning movement and the operator using one hand for accomplishing this. lVith the other hand the operator may easily unscrew the top or cover from the ar without danger of cutting that hand which is holding the jar against turning movement.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a jar holder of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be conveniently used to advantage for holding a jar while removing the top or cover therefrom.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A jar holder comprising relatively rigid handles, a pliable metallic arcuate band attached at its ends to the handles at one end thereof, an arcuate resilient strip attached at its ends to the other ends of the handles, the ends of the band being spaced apart for a greater distance than the ends of the strip whereby the handles normally converge toward each other from the band to the strip, the band being of greater diameter than the strip, said band and strip serving as the only means which attach with the handles, thereby leaving an unobstructed space be tween the handles which leads at the ends of the handles into the spaces within the band and the strip.
