WILSON R. BEARCE AND REES J. JONES, 0F SAW'I'ELLE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANCESCO HAMMOND, OF CASEY, ILLINOIS.
JAR-HOLDER.
Application filed September 15, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILSON R. BEAROE and Runs J. JoNns, citizens of the United States, residing at Sawtelle, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jar holders or lifters, and has special reference to a novel and practical device of this character which is capable of being used on jars of all sizes with equal facility.
To this end, the invention contemplates a simple and substantial device in the nature of a hand tool which may be readily adjusted as desired to fit a jar or like vessel of any diameter before being placed thereon. This is of special advantage in handling fruit jars which ordinarily stand in hot water prior to being filled, since it enables the device to be adjusted to fit the jar and then readily clamped thereto by a slight hand pressure. Furthermore, it is possible to obtain a good grip on the jar to hold the same still while screwing the cap on or removing the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that is adjustable at its fulcrum point, thereby making the same more practical and eliminating any parts or projections adjacent the handles to interfere with the hand grip thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sanitary device that is simple, substantial and easily manufactured, thus providing an article that is practical, durable, and capable of an attractive commercial embodiment.
WVith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved jar holder with its parts in position to clamp a jar or other vessel, the same being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view showing the method of securing the desired adjustment between the Specification of Letters Patent.

two lever members, prior to their final form as shown in Fig. 1. 1
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Although the present invention is suscept1ble of embodiment in difierent forms and designs, in all cases, the same essentially consists of a pair of compressible lever members 1 and 2, which respectively comprise the flexible jar-gripping segments 3 and 4:, and the handles or hand grip members 5 and 6.
In the case of the lever member 1, it will be observed that the segment 3 which is preferably made of light spring metal, is covered on its inner side with a rubber or equivalent protecting sheath or facing 7. The free or tenon end 8 of the said segment 3 is provided along its side edges with a plurality of oppositely located open end notches 9 which are preferably spaced relatively close together at the extreme free end of the segment, and are gradually spaced farther apart as they approach nearer the end to which the handle member 5 is attached. Thus, the tenon end of the segment 3 is provided with a plurality of graduated adjustment notches which are disposed at right angles to the general direction of the segment and become narrower as they approach the end thereof, thereby presenting laterally disposed locking arms having the abutment edges 10 for the mortise end 11 of the segment or band 4L of the lever 2. This arrangement provides an adjustment tenon or member having notches progressively decreasing in width as they approach the end thereof, and the locking arms being closer together to provide for a graduated adjustment between the segments of the two members. Like the lever member 1, the segment 1 of the said member 2 is provided with a suitable soft facing or covering 7 which will aid in giving a firmer grip on the jar or other vessel when the device is in use, and the mortise end 11 thereof is provided with a longitudinally disposed mortise slot 12 which is closed at both ends so that one end 13 thereof will abut with the locking shoulders 10 of the adjustment notch 9 to hold the lever members in their relative adjusted position.
By reference to the manner of manipulating and adjusting the lever members 1 that the member 1 is held in a relatively stationary position, while the member 2 is held at right angles thereto. In this position, the mortise slot 12 can freely receive the tenon end 8 of the segment 3, and the said mortise end of the segment 4: may be moved over the adjustment notches 9 until the desired one thereof is reached which will make the two segments of the lever members conform to the size of the jar with which the device is to be used. When the desired notch has been selected, the lever member 2 is brought up into the same plane as the lever member 1 by turning the mortise end 11 of the segment a so that the end 13 of the mortise slot engages with the locking shoulders 10 of the slot to thereby prevent lateral separation of the two members. Accordingly, the lever members 1 and 2 are relatively adjustable at their fulcrum point to alter the diameter of the circle formed by the segments 3 and 4.
In View of the preceding description, it will be clear that the lever members 1 and 2 become separably interlocked through the medium of the longitudinally disposed mortise slot and the adjustment notches 9 disposed at right angles to the general direction or longitudinal center of the segment 3, and when the members are thus interlocked the lever 2 may readily be turned at its point of engagement with the lever 1 as a fulcrum to clamp the jar, but as the segments 3 and 4: are made of flexible or springy material, further compression may be obtained when the handles 5 and 6 are brought together. The provision of rubber, felt, or other soft material on the inner faces of the segments 3 and 4: also facilitates the obtaining of a positive and effective grip on the jar which will prevent the same from slipping, and furthermore, prevents the same Copies of this patent may be obtained for spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A jar holder including a pair of'separable lever members each including a handle element and a jar gripping segment, one of said segments having a series of transversely disposed notches in both of its side edges, and the other of said segments having a terminal longitudinally-disposed mortise slot, the said segments being engaged and disengaged by a relative quarter turn thereof.
2. A jar holder including a pair of separable lever members each including a handle element and a metal jar gripping segment, one of said segments having a series of transversely disposed notches in both of its side edges and the other of said segments having a longitudinally-disposed mortise slot, and an inside cushioning gasket for each of said segments, the gasket for the notched segment having a reduced band lying at the inner side of the notched portion.
in testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
