To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. DAL- LAOI-IIE, a citizen of the .Unitedfitates, residing at Newton Center,.i1'1 thecounty-of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in a pen holder and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby a pair of pens may be supported by the holder and one disposed within the holder when the other pen is being used.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a holder having a pair of compartments in which is slidably mounted pen grips to receive and support pens in operative and inoperativ position.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a novel means of connecting the pen grips together so that one will support a pen exteriorly of the holder, while the other one supports its respective pen within one of the compartments so that the last named pen will not interfere with the use of the first named pen.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a pen holder of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Pen grips 5 and 6 are slidably mounted within the upper and lower compartments 4 and have formed thereon, rack bars 7 and 8, which extend rearwardly through a support- 111g partition 9 which supports the partition 3. The rack bars 7 and 8 are in mesh with a pinion 10 that is journaled upon a shaft 11 carried by the body 1, and disposed rearwardly of the supporting partition 9. Pens 12 are carried by the grips 5 and 6, which may be of any desired type. The grip 5 has formed thereon, a shank 13 that extends through a slot 14: in the holder 1. A thumb piece 15 is formed upon the shank 13 and has its rear end curved downwardly to form a catch 16, which catch is adapted to engage either of the branches 17 or 18 of the slot 1 1 for holding either of the pens 12 in an operative position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that a novel form of penholder has been provided, which is capable of supporting a pair of pens in such a manner that neither of the pens will interfere with the use of the other. The en holder being principally provided for t e purpose of bookkeeping, to obviate the necessity of employing two pen holders, one for red ink and the other for black ink, thus my improved pen holder will support the red and black ink pens in such a manner that they will not interfere with one another and either of which may be moved into an operative position and the other moved simultaneously into an inoperative position.

In operation, when it is desired to change the pens within the pen holder 1, the catch 16 of the finger grip 15 is disengaged from the branch 17 and slid rearwardly into engagement with the branch 18 of the slot 14:. As the finger grip 15 is slid rearwardly in the slot 14, the grip 5 moves rearwardly, rotating the pinion and carrying therewith, its respective pen. As the pinion 10 rotates, it

' moves the grip 6 carrying it respective pen forwardly into an operative position so that the same can be readily Written with.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, 'it will 5 be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
