IMPROVEMENT IN BROGANS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,505, dated AprilQ, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. TYLER, of Georgetown, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement to Brogans, or what are termed by the trade Plow-Shoes and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l denotes a top view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a brogan constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a representation ofthe upper of a brogan as developed on a plane surface, or as it appears when cut from a skin or side of leather, such showing the line of the instep-opening. Fig. dis a similar representation of the upper of a brogan for which Letters Patent were granted to me on April 25, 1871, the part within the dotted lines showing` the portion that was cut out in order to give the proper shape or curvature to the instep.

Prior to my invention there were not, to my knowledge, any high-quartered buckled shoes having a lappel or iiap to fold over and inclose the instep-opening, except such as had the lappel or ap formed of a separate piece and sewed to one side of the said opening. This was objectionable, as the seam or ridge formed by the sewing not only often abraded the arch `of the instep, but was objectionable in other respects. To remedy these evils and produce a stronger, neater, and more econom ical shoe of this character is the object of my invention.

My present invention is an improvement upon the aforementioned patented one, its leading characteristic and wherein it differs therefrom consisting in the peculiar manner of cutting and folding the instep portion, so that the part ofthe leather therein cut out to form the proper curvature (and thus wasted) is, in my present invention, preserved and formed into a lappel to fold over andelose the instep-opening, thus producing a neat lappel without the disadvantages of a seam.

In Figs. l and 2 of the drawing A denotes the upper, B the sole, and C the heel of a brogan embodying my improvement.

In carrying out my present invention I cut from a cowhide77 or other suitable kind of leather, and by means of a die or pattern, the

blank or piece to constitute the upper of the brogan. This blank or piece is of the peculiar shape shown in Fig. 3, and is cut by the same die as that used in cutting the blank shown in Fig. 4, the two being identical in their areas. In such tgures a denotes the vamp or front portion, and b b the quarters or heel portion. After the blank has been cut from the side 7 or piece of leather the vamp or front part of the blank is to be dampened and drawn over a block or former of the proper shape, and crimped or molded in order to give the desired curvature to the vamp. After the blank has become dry or set,7 instead of cutting the vamp so that the two quarters or instep portions b b shall be of the same size and form, as in my said patented invention, (which is effected by cutting out the central portion, as shown by the dott-ed lines in Fig. 4,) I cut one of the quarters or instep portions b of the same size and contour as that ofthe patented invention, as shown by one of the dotted lines c c c in said gure, and leave the portion embraced within the dotted lines of such iigure attached to the fellow instep portion to form a lappel, e, to fold over and upon the lesser instep portion, and thereby close the lacing-slit or opening, as found in my said patented brogan. Next, the heel portions are brought together and united by a line of sewing. Next, a buckle, d, is affixed by a shortwstrap to the lesser quarter or instep portion b and a leather tongue to its fellow portion, and the latter folded and drawn over the former so as to close the instep-opening.

In case the piece of leather may not be of sufficient size to form the blank or upper of the shoe entire, as shown in Fig. 3, two pieces lnay be employed; but the main portion ofthe upper should consist of one entire piece, of such size and so cut that the lappel shall be without seam and fold over the lesser or sea-med part.

I do not herein claim a brogan having its upper formed of a single piece of leather, and with its front or toe portion crimped in order to obtain the desired curve or contour, as such is found in my said patent; but

What I do claim as an improvement thereon 1s- 1. The improved broga-n or heavy high-quartered buckled shoe, liu-ving' its upper7 formed of a sin gie piece oileat-her, eut, shaped, crimped, and connected substantially in manner as shown and described.

2. Au upper for a broga-n or heavy highquartered shoe as made of aJ single piece of leather, of the form as shown and described, when cut and crimped in manner and for the purpose set forth.
