INVENTOR WITNESSES Q ATTORNEY WITED STATES PATENT @FFHEE.
GABRIEL A. FRISBEE, OF VONA, COLORADO.
SMOKING-PIPE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed April 24, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL A. FRIsBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vona, in the county of Kit Carson and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipe Attachments, of which the following is a speclfication.
The present invention comprehends the provision of a cap or cover designed for use in connection with the bowl of a smoking pipe, to prevent sparks or tobacco leaving the bowl as the result of strong winds, and to further maintain the tobacco confined within the bowl when the pipe is being carried in the pocket.
In carrying out the invention I provide a cap for the above mentioned purpose which is extremely simple in construction, so that the same can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost, the device being designed to accommodate itself to bowls of difi'erent sizes.
Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of a cap embodying resilient fingers for retaining the cap associated with the bowl of the pipe, the fingers being so disposed that the cap may be very conveniently associated with or removed from the bowl as the occasion may require.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combi nation and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cap constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View therethrough and through the bowl. of the pipe showing the parts associated.
The device forming the subject matter of my invention embodies a cap 10 which may Specification of Letters Patent.

be constructed from any suitable material and design, but which is preferably formed from metal and of substantially frusto-conical formation. The top 11 of the cap at diametrically opposite points is provided with openings 12 through which the limbs 13 of a substantially inverted U-shaped resilient element are passed, the extremities of the said limbs engaging against the inner surface of the body portion of the cap, and thus the Ushaped element is rigidly fixed with respect to the cap. The top 11 is further provided with an elongated slot 11 which extends across the entire width of the top, and in which slot operate the resilient fingers 15 of a substantially V-shaped element. The V-shaped element straddles the element of which the limbs 13 form a part, and is secured to said element at the point of intersection in any suitable manner. The resilient fingers 15 project beyond the lower edge of the cap 10 so that the free extremities thereof may effectively engage within the bowl of the pipe adjacent the upper edge thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, for the purpose of holding the cap upon the bowl. The fingers 15 have a tendency to spread apart, and consequently normally engage the lower edge of the cap. By reason of this fact, the fingers 15 can be adjusted toward or away from each other, so that the device in its entirety may accommodate itself to bowls of different sizes. It will now be noted that the fingers 15 project an appreciable distance above the top 11 of the cap, with a view of affording a proper hold to be obtained thereon by the fingers and thumbs of the user, so that by simply moving the fingers 15 toward each other, the cap can be very convenient-1y attached to or removed from the bowl of the pipe.
While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to this precise construction, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
lVhat is claimed is VA cover for smoking pipes embodying a gated slot, a yoke fixed upon the top, a substantially inverted V-shaped element being secured at its vertex to said yoke, With the limbs of said element extended through said slot, said limbs being relatively movable and terminating beyond said cap for detachably is holding the latter associated with the bowl.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
GABRIEL A. FRISBEE.
