zgm ei'zgilimr ill Jaw/m1, gflmw- W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM S. BLUNT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHlSK-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,010, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. BLUNT, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Whisk-Brushes; and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same. 7
Small hand-brooms or brushes have been made of broom-corner other fiber, with a Wooden handle covered with leather or Woven material, and this covering has in some instances extended down as a skirt over the upper end of the broom to the binding-cords. These coverings-and skirts are difficult to apply without folds or plaits being formed, as they are secured to the irregular surface of the handle and broom-head. My invention is made for ornamenting the head of the brush or broom, securing the broom-corn or fibers more firmly, and protecting them from injury, and also furnishing a second brush at the end of the handle that is soft and pliable, and hence adapted to purposes of dusting or brushing where the broom-corn is not available.
In the drawing I have represented said Whisk-broom in elevation complete. The broom-corn or other fiber a is secured to a handle in the usual manner; but outside of this handle I apply a layer of jute, flax, or other pliable fibrous material, as at (Z, and secure the same firmly and evenly around such handle by the wire or other binding at b, and the fibers projecting at the end of the handle form a brush or duster, as at e, that is adapted to removing dust from clothing and articles of furniture Where the broom-corn end of the brush would be either liable to injure the article or else not to entirely remove the dust. This covering to the handle is ornamental, as Well as being soft to the hand; and the fibers, being applied loosely to the handle, are easily spread thereon, and accommodate themselves to the shape of the handle. When the fibrous covering of the handle is left projecting sufliciently over the head of the broom to reach down to the line of sewing or binding at i, the fibers are to be spread evenly and secured by said binding 2' and the projecting ends form a fringe that is ornamental, and also form a yielding support to the broom-corn or other fiber to prevent the same breaking off contiguous to the binding, as is frequently the case with Whisk-brooms heretofore made; and the handle and broom are very securely connected by this covering.
The broom or brush formed as aforesaid is a new article of manufacture.
I claim. as my invention- 1. The covering for the handle of whiskbrooms, made of jute, flax, or similar fiber, extending as a brush beyond the end of the handle, as set forth.
2. The jute, flax, or similar fiber secured to the handle, and extending over the head of the broom to form a skirt that is secured to the broom by the binding-cords i, as and for the purposes set forth.
- Signed by me this 19th day of February, A. D; 1872.
H. S. BLUNT.
