To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORION K. TIELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horner, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for following is a 7 hands or other parts of the body and which may be readily carried between trees 'or A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will permit a reel to be quicklyinserted and an emptyreel or spool to be removed. lln carrying out my invention, I employ a pair of standards 1 which may be constructed of any suitable material and will preferably be connected at their upper ends by a beam 2, the standards and the beam forming an inverted U-shaped frame. Across the top and partway down the sides of the U-shaped frame thus produced, I secure a reinforcing and bracing bar 3 of metal having laterally extending handles 4 at its ends, as clearly shown. in the standards, near the lower ends thereof, I provide openings which receive a removable axle or supporting rod 5 having a head 6 or other form of stop at one end and equipped at its other end with a nut 7 adapted to be turned home against the adjacent standard so that the rod or axle may be securely fastened in the standards. The reel may be formed of wooden bars, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4-, which is the type generally employed by barbed wire manufacturers. This type of reel has central openings in its ends which will fit closely around the axle 6 so that the reel will not be apt to be distorted under the strain imposed upon the wire while it is being applied to a fence and will not be apt to tilt or rock so as to entangle the wire. The barbed wire is sometimes furnished upon reels constructed of metallic rods, such a reel being shown at 14 in Fig. 5. These reels have very large openings in their ends and would rock or tilt excessively upon an axle frame, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and will be thereby so disposed that the hands or bodies of the workmen will not be apt to be scratched by the barbs as they pass from the reel and the device may be easily carried by the workmen, one at either side, grasping the handles 4. Should the progress of the work bring the workmen to a point where a tree or some other object is close to the fence, and the space is so contracted that ordinarily two men could not pass through it, the guard frame is swung about its pivotal connection with the standards, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that it will lie close against the standards, whereupon the workmen may swing the entire device around and pass through the space in single file instead of attempting to go through abreast. Should the field or line of fence be clear of trees or other plants, the guard frame may be locked in its position by means of a pin 19 inserted through openings 20 and 21 in the side bars of the guard frame and the lower ends of the standards or flanges 9, as will be readily understood. It will be readily noted that the lower ends of the standards and the side members of the guard frame have an angular engagement so that they will not readily be displaced and, conse quently, the guard frame will always be in I position to prevent a person running against or brushing by the roll of barbed wire. The device is preferably constructed of wood, but it may be made of angle iron or any other preferred material.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination of a carrier frame, an axle removably fitted in the lower ends of the frame, and a reinforcing bar secured over the top and against the sides of the frame and having handles at its ends projecting laterally from the sides of the frame.
2. The combination of a supporting frame, means for mounting a reel therein, a guard frame adapted to bear against the lower ends of the supporting frame and extending in opposite directions beyond the opposite sides of the same, and connecting devices secured rigidly to the guard frame and pivotally attached to the supporting frame, the said connecting devices and pirots being located eccentric relative to the two frames whereby the guard frame will be overbalanced and will tend to extend across the lower ends of the supporting ORION K.
