Be it known that I, CHARLES V. KAHOA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Russell, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Machine for Making Vire Fences, of which the fcllowing is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple, strong, andV durable machine adapted to be manually operated for iixingcross-wires to fence-Wires that are stretched between and fixed `to a line of fence-posts in such a manner that the cross-wires will serve as stays for the fixed fence-wires and also in such a manner that the cross-wire may be continuous and extend up and down at close intervals as required to produce a woven-wire fence.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of operative mechanisms with a frame having a handle, as hereinafter set forthg pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side View of the machine, and Fig. 2 an edge View showingthe relative positions of all the operative parts connected with the frame. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line x a; of Fig. 1, showing a detent for retaining the crank and rotatable wheels stationary. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spool for holding wire detached from the machine'.
The letter A designates the two matingn metal parts of the frame jointly iixed by means of rivets or in any suitable way to a Wooden handle B in'such a manner that they will extend in parallel position. Between the mating parts of the frame are mating gearwheels O and D, journaled thereto and in mesh with each other. To the axle of the wheel C a crank-handle F is applied, as required for rotating the wheels. The ends of the mating parts A of the frame are bifurcated and a gear-wheel H, corresponding in size with the Wheels O and D, has a tubular hub H2, that is fitted in corresponding bearings in the bifurcated end portions of the mating parts of the frame and the ends of the hub project on each side of the frame. The wheel and hub are slotted, so that when properly adjusted, as shown in Fig. 1, the
end of the frame and the wheel H and its hollow hub H2 can be placed astride of a fixed fence-wire and the slotted hub and wheel rotated as required to coil a stay-wire on the fence-wire.
J is a spool mounted in a wire frame J2, adapted to be detachably connected to the hub H2 by means of pins K, as shown in Fig. 2, in such a manner that when the hub H2 is rotated wire willbe drawn from the spool and coiled ou the fence-wire that extends through the hub.
m is a wire frame that has eyes at its ends and is detachably fastened on the end of the hub by means of a pin m to extend transversely through coinciding pin-holes in the hub. Coinciding notches in the edge of the hub admit the wire frame to aid in retaining said frame stationary and as required to aid in coiling the wire that comes from the spool around a fence-wire that extends longitudinally through the hub.
N is a stud projecting from the face of one ot the parts A of the frame. It has a slot in its free end to admit the end of the wire on the spool and serve as a means of fastening the end of the wire, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
P isa detent in the form of a wire frame fixed to the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, or in any suitable way, so that it will retain the handle-crank F in proper position to keep the slotted wheel H and hub H2 in position, as shown in Fig. 1 and as requiredfor placing the machine on and od a fixed fence-wire.
Dowel-pins r, fixed in the end of the hub H2, are adapted to enter corresponding pinholes in the end of the spool J to aid in retaining the spool connected with the end of the hub, as indicated in Fig. 2 and as required for using the machine to bind wire on the spool. A pin or bolt s extends through the spool and hub and is fastened by means of Va key s and aids in retaining the spool in alinement with the hub when the spool and hub are jointly rotated for winding wire on the spool. j
Having thus described the purpose of my invention and the construction, functions, ar rangement, and combination of all the parts, the practical operation and utility of the ma- IOO bifurcated, and a gear-wheel having a tubular hub and coinciding slots in the wheel and hub to admit a fence-wire, two mating gear-wheels journaled in the framel below the wheel havj ing the tubular vhub, a crank-handle on 'the axle of the lower gear i Wheel, and a Wire frame fixed across the lower end of the frame to engage the crank-handle, arranged and combined to operate in the-manner set forthA and coinciding slots in the wheel and hub, a

A machine for fixing cross-Wires to fixed fence-wires, comprising a frame composed of two mating parts fixed to-a handle to extend in parallel position therefrom and in alinement therewith, the ends of said mating parts bifurcated, three gearwheels mounted between the 'mating parts of said frame, Vthe wheel nearest the handle provided `with a crank-handle, a detent on the lower end lof the frame for holding the crank-handle, the wheel at `the bifurcated ends provided with a tubular hub, coinciding slots in `said wheel and hub to admita fence-wire, a frameadapts ed to be detachably fastened lto one end of said hub, means for fastening saidframe to the hub, a spool mounted on said frame .and means fixed in said `hubfor coiling the/.crosswire 'around the fence-wire, arranged and combined toroperatein the manner set forth for thepurposes stated.
