Description

R. 8. JENNINGS.
Improvement in Du st Pans.
fi f'fiessea Inventor.
- M1; W y W k; W MA w STATES IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,584, dated March 12, 1872 antedated March 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. S. JENNINGS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ofPennsylvania, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Dust-Pans; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of my invention. Fig.2 is a bottom view of the lid.
My invention has relation to an improvement in dust-pans with hinged covers; and it consists in the application to the edges of the hinged cover of strips of rubber, leather, or other flexible material, whereby the dust is effectually prevented from escaping from the pan.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the pan proper, made in the form shown, preferably, or in any of the usual forms. B represents the cover hinged to the upper rear portion of the pan. 0 c designate my packingstrips, which are secured by means of the cleats d d, or in any other suitable manner, so that their outer edges shall project a short distance beyond the edges of the cover, as illustrated. These short flaps are designed to fit closely the side walls and bottom of the pan, thus efi'ectually preventing the escape of any dust from the pan. Instead of fastening the side strips to the lid, they may be secured to the wall of the pan; but this latter mode is not preferred. The side strips serve also as a means for keeping the cover down on account of the-friction between them and the side walls of the pan. So, also, they serve to keep the lid in any desired position, this adjustability being limited by the height of the side walls. The strips or cleats d d should be secured to the cover so as to be removable, with the object of permitting the strips 0 c to be pushed out as they wear off by friction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a dust-pan having hinged lid, of the packing-strips c a, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RALPH S. JENNINGS.
