UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB I. ORKIN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO BOSTON GARBAGE CAN COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPO- RATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed December 18,1905. serial No. 292,164.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB I. ORKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles and Covers, of which the following is aspeciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved garbage-receptacle and cover made, preferably, of metal and arranged so that the cover can be firmly pressed upon the receptacle, .so that air cannot pass from the same, thus allowing the receptacle to be kept within doors without fear of bad odors passing therefrom, together with a disinfectant-chamber within the receptacle and attached to the inside portion of the inwardly-concaved cover, so that it does not at any time come in contact with the garbage within the receptacle.
The invention consists in the combination of elements and in certain parts of construction entailed in the combination of said elements to obtain the desired result.
A full understanding of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a preferred construction embodying the various features of the invention, and such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings; and I at tain my object by the mechanism there illustrated, showing such preferred construction, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device, showing the receptacle closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper portion of the same, showing the disinfectant-chamber in place. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the cover. Fig. 4: is a front elevation of the upper portion of the.
device.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
- Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the drawings by the same reference characters.
The receptacle a, preferably a cylindrical metal can, is provided at its upper part with a circumferential rim or flange a, upon which is adapted to rest the cover I). The receptacle a is provided with the carrying-handle (Z, attached to the side in any desirable manner, but so arranged that the handle can be swung back free of the cover when it is desired to open the receptacle, and it is also provided with the handle a near its lower portion, which can be used in tipping the receptacle to remove the garbage or other contents.
The cover I) is attached by the rivets or other suitable means 1" to the leaf '0 of the hinge c, which hinge is attached to the upper outer portion of the receptacle (1 by the rivets s or other desirable means. The hinge is so constructed as to allow the cover when raised to be swung free from the rim of the receptacle.
' On the top of the cover diametrically opposite to the leaf 1; of the hinge c is secured a tongue or lip h, held by rivets t or other suitable means and upon which can be pressed the lever f, pivotally mounted on the staple g, swung on a plate a, that is secured to the receptacle a by the pins a or other means. This lever f is adapted to be carried up onto the lip h, as shown in Fig. 4, and then swung down upon the same into the position shown in Fig. 1, thus wedging the cover down hard upon the top of the receptacle, the lever when in this position acting as a bolt to keep the cover locked.
Within the receptacle attached to the inner side of the cover by a screw or other fastening means 0 is a disinfectant-chamber, preferably consistin of the boX m, in which is placed a piece of fibrous material 9 of layers of felt or other material for holding the disinfectant liquid, the box m being rovided with a cover it, having a number 0 perforations to allow the odor from the disinfectant to pass downward into the receptacle.
The cover I) is concaved, as at b, on its inner side and is provided near its outer edge with a circumferential groove Z, as shown in Fig. 3, in which is placed elastic material preferably a strip of rubber, which may be wedged into the groove or held in place by tongues 10 or other means.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, but that said details may be varied in the practical carrying out of my invention. It is also to be understood that the combinations specifically set forth in the several claims are intended to be separately claimed without limitation to the use in connection illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A garbage-receptacle consisting of a can provided on its upper edge With an outwardly-extending head, a hinge, a metallic cover attached by the hinge to the can and having a circumferential groove in its under side, near its outer edge, a strip of rubber secured in the groove, a locking-lever attached to the can for firmly pressing the cover upon the can, a flat box secured to the under side of the cover, a perforated lid for the box, and a strip of fibrous material within the box for holding disinfectant, substantially as shown 25 and described.
2. A garbage-receptacle provided with an outwardly-extending hinge, a cover attached to the leaf of the hinge and having a circumferential groove in its under side near its periphery, a flat strip of elastic material secured in the groove, a lip secured to the upper side therewith of other features of construction of the cover and projecting beyond the rim 5 of the cover, a camlever hinged to the receptacle adapted to be wedged down upon the lip pressing the cover and elastic material tightly against the receptacle, a perforated chamber removably secured to the under side of the cover, fibrous material within the chamber, for holding a disinfectant, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB I. ORKIN.
