clear," and exactdescription'; I
Our invention is intended morepartic'u larly" for' 'embodiment in a mafchine involving theu'se of arran'eandbticket and-adapt-fl ed to be employed fer variouspurposes, such as digging, loading manure; hoisting, r sa haystacker:
Thevarious objects and advantagesof the invention will more particularly 'ap'p'ear as the description proceeds Reference isto be hadtothe 'acco'nipanyg' ing drawings forming a part of this specifi tion in which similar referencefcharactjers indicate eorres onding mts in all theview's.
Figure 1' "is a side elevationfof a "machine embodying our invention with"parts broken ay? v a 'Fig. 2 is an'enlar edftransverse vertical section on the "1ine2 2,-'Fig. 1;, I
In constructing a machine "embodying our inventioina 'platfo'r'mlO is provided desirably"having an'axl'e 11 for mounting running wheels 12 and having any suitliiile pro- Vision 13 for the connection 0f a draft tongue.
A suitable frame 14is erected on the platform 10 and in said frame is' "mounted' 'a post or mast 15 of a crane, said post having,
in the example shown, a set collar 16 rest- 51g on a head 17 on the frame 14. The post 15 turns in a suitable bearing 18 in the head 17 and in a lower bearing 18 secured to frame members 19.
The jib or arm 20 of the crane uspends a bucket or skip 21, the cable 22 of which is secured at one end to said arm 20 and runs over sheaves, 23, 24, on the bucket and over either of two sheaves, 25, 26, on the arm 20 and thence over a standing sheave 27 at the top of the post '15, through which post the cable extends downwardly to a drum 28 on the platform 10.
The numeral 29 indicates a suitable engine on the platform 10, the shaft of which turns the main drive shaft able means such as a belt 30. On the shaft 31 isa lo'osebarrel pinion 32, driving conne'ction'bet-ween th'esaid shaft 31" andplnion' 32 is controlled by any suitable blutcli' engagement by a spring'35.
wheel 36 onthe'shaft 37 antenna-1e81- Th ClIUmfQS i's conti'o'lled by tlie'fdllow 4 f l llidi and "mating a nose 45 adapted tdbeariagainst the inner band 46 embraces the hub 47 of th'eidruni 28; said band" being ise'c'urcdiat one "end is the" yoke and 'at its o posite as a post'46? or other fixed' nember oiftl iei' frani'e or platform;- By the de' s'ci' ibed cOnst'ruc tibfIir vibrated vertically to" control the brake band i 46.
On the shaft 31 is a pinion 48 in mesh with a similar pinion 49 on a counter-shaft 50 and on said shafts 31 and 50 are worms, 51, 52, which, by reason of the oinions, 48, 49, will turn in opposite directions. Either of the said worms is adapted to have driving engagement with a worm Wheel 53 on a sliding collar 54 on the lower end of the post 15, said collar being adapted to be shifted by a lever 55 through links 56, whereby to throw said worm wheel 53 into driving engagement with either of the worms, 51, 52, for turning the post 15 in either direction. In operation the clutch lever 34 may be thrown to disestablish driving connection between the drum gear 36 and the I hoisting and lowering. In said figure, it will be observed that the end of the cable is made fast to the jib at an eye 56 on said jib and runs thence to the sheave 23, to the sheave 2%, and then upwardly over the sheave on said jib to the sheave 27 The rigging in Fig. 3 is for using the bucket 21 as a drag in ditching or excavating. In this latter arrangement the end of the cable is made fast to an eye 57, or the like, on the jib 20 inward from the eye 56 and thence c'lownwardlyabout the sheaves 23, 2%, on the bucket and thence over the sheave 26, which is positioned onthe jib 20 outward from the eye 57. It will thus be seen that in the rigging in Fig. 1 the bucket is disposed outwardly while in. the rigging in Fig. 3, the nose of the bucket is disposed inwardly for dragging the same toward the crane. The bucket has suitable handles 59 for manual guiding. The cable 22 has a stop 60 thereon that may be variously positioned by a set screw 61. j
In transporting the machine, the bucket is adapted to be carried on the platform 10 and provision is made for swinging the post 15 downwardly to approximately a horizontal' position. Any suitable means may be provided for permitting the pivotal movement of the post 15 in'the vertical plane and for sustaining it firmly in an erect position. Anexpedient for this purpose may consist of studs 62 (Fig. 3), on opposite sides of the bearing 18 and extending through the head or box 17. The said studs 62have nuts 68. An auxiliary bearing sleeve 18 in the head .17 below the bearing 18 is adapted to receive bolts or set screws 64: which are removed when the post is to be swung downwardly on the pivots 62. To permit the swinging of the lower end of the post 15, the bearing 18 is detachably secured to the frame member 19, said bearing having a flange 65 for the purpose which is secured by bolts 66. To permit a swinging of the post also, the connection of the collar 54 with the lever is broken by detaching any of the link con-' nections as at 67. In any event, the removal of only. a few bolts is necessary to swing the post to the lowered position. 7
" T he various shafts have hearings in suit able frame members, indicated generally by the character 14 As best seen in Fig. 4, the'sheaves, 23, 24,
are disposed in tandem on the bucket 21 on a forwardly projecting arm overhanging the scoop, said arm cOnSisting of convergingfside members 21 and intermediate frame members 21 provided with cheeks 21, 21 for the respectivesheav'es. v
' Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A machine of the class described including a mast mountedto turn, a drive shaft, a countenshaft geared with the drive shaft, worms on said drive shaft and countershaft, a worm wheel movable vertically on the mast to engage-with either of said worms or to a neutral position and adapted to turn the mastaboutitsvertical axis, and means to raise and lower'said worm wheel. In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 2
