IMPROVEMENT lN HORSE-POWERS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,214, dated June 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER K. DEDEEIGK, of the city of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse Hoisting- Machines, of Which the following is a speciiication:

In Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, A is the frame, bolted on cross-timbers B at the bottom. Gis the main`or drive vWheel D, the sweep. In Figs. 1, 2, and 4, E is the pinion, geared to the main or drive wheel C, and secured to the horizontal shaft F, in Fig. 4, on which the windingdrum, G, Fig. 4, revolves.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will here state that in all horse hoisting machines heretofore the operator must move around with the horse in order to operate the brake and shipping-connections, in consequence of the upper journal of the machine revolving with the shaft and together cutting off all stationary communication.
In my machine the frame A forms a hollow journal at the top, as shown at4 H in Figs. 3 and 4, and around which the main or drive wheel C revolves. At the top of this journal may be secured a platform, I, as shown in all the gures, to which may be secured a seat, J, upon which the machine may be operated, always facing the work,- and with the same ease and precision as a steam hoisting-engine.
The hoisting-drum G may be attached or detached in various ways. For instance, in Fig. 4K is a ange securedto the shaft F. L is a loose slide on same shaft, to which is attached a box, N, passing through the drum G and locking into the flange K, thus securing or detaching the drum as the slide L is moved. The slide L may be operated by the lever M, which is attached by means of the recess or groove formed in the slide L. Said lever M may be operated by crank-connections O, as also shown in Fig. 4. To check the uncoil of the rope or descent of the weight raised a strap-brake, P, Figs. 3 and 4, is used, which is also operated through the hollow. journal and drive-wheel by means of connections Q and foot-'lever E.
In operation the machine is placed as shown in Fig. 4, with the drum G facing the work or pulley, under which the hoisting-rope passes direct from the machine, and fastened to the ground or ioor. The horse is attached to the end of the sweep or lever D, and the operator takes his position on the platform I or seat J, and by moving the lever S and connections the drum G is locked to the flange` K, which must then revolve with the shaft F, pinion E, and drive-wheel C as the horse moves' around, and the hoisting-rope being attached to the face of the drum G must be wound upon it and raise the weight attached to the desired height, which, when accomplished, and the load discharged, the operator places his` foot on the lever R, thus securing the drum G by the friction-brake, and the drum is then `detached by reversing the slide, &c., and `the platform or bucket gradually lowered again by friction-brake.
When desired, the drum G may be placed 'perpendicular instead of horizontal.
