THROTTLE-VALVE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1911*?.
Application ledfMayZS, 1917. Serial No. 170,519.
.To all wwmit may concern 'Be yit `know-n thatwe, `FRANK 11, CLARK and JOSEPH M. Correr, citizens of the- United' States, residing at New York, inthel county of New York and State of vNew York, have invented certain new andL useful.
Improvements in .Throttle-Valves, of which f the following is a specification.
This invention relates to throttleevalve vameterV which results in the kreduction @in height of the superstructure such .as the smoke stack, steam dome, etc. As is fof course known in `most cases, the throttle valve is `located within the steam `doineand it is necessary that kthe throttle valve be placed kabove the water line and as high as possible therein. The actuating mechanism therefore `preferably extends outwardlythrough `the side ofthe dome and thenceV rearwardly to the cab. F or1ceitaiirreasons throttle valves of the'lifttype. are preferred,
that is, valves in which the actuating mech. with the underside anism is connected thereof and the present invention is directed more particularlyto mechanism which permits the transmission of power from a point without the steam dome to this type of throttle valve.
With thisiexplanation .in mind, some of the objects of the present invention are to provide a suitablethrottle Vvalve actuating mechanism foruse-in very low steam domes which will be of simple` construction, inex-v pensive toy manufacture andfinstall, and vreliable and eflicient inyuseand operation.
Azfurther object is to provide a construction ofthe above s general character in'gwhichla leakage of steam to the stuiiing box isfposi-l tively` prevented Awhen `t-he throttle .i valve `is closed. Afurther vrobject isito,` provide mechanism of the above character ,which r5G` permits inspection Aand 'repairing i of` the sti1i^hng;box,`-vvliile the engine is under steam. ,.ther yobjects will be in partV obvious from the: annexedidrawings; and part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.
This invention `accordingly consists in the featuresr of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relativeproportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention', drawings depicting two preferred fornishave been annexed asa part ofnthis disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all. the views, in which- Figure lis an elevational view partly-in section showing such parts of the invention as are necessary to fully understand the same;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view partly in sec-` tion takenat right rangles to F ig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail, and
F'gs. l and 5 show a modification.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 5 denotes a boilershell provided with steam dome A6 within which is located a throttle valve box 7 having dry pipe connection 8 at the bottom thereof. rllhe actual valve structure which forms no real part of the present invention -is substantially the saine as that illustrated and described in our prior Patent 1,220,729, March 27,1917, except that the actuating connection isthrough the underside of the balance chamber instead of abovefthe throttle valve as shown inthis patent. It is` believed that this requiresno further detailed description. Y
On the outside of the steam dome. G islocated a stuffing box preferably of that character shown in ourco-pendinrg application Serial Number 98651filed MayrlQ, 1916, although other formsI ofv stuffing boxes Vmay be used if Lso desired. It istherefore believed tobe sufficient for the present disclosure to permitthe numeral ;10 to repre'- sent the end of this stuffing box through which-,an` actuating shaft 11 passes. This shaft-.is yinclosed withinl a' sleeve 12 passing through aflarlge or cover kmember 13 bolted,
toi-thefthrottlebox7 andV provided witha y tion or repacking of the Stuffing box without ground ,face yinsuring tight construction. n is provided with a squared end fitting with-4 in a crank 14 whereby. it may be easily moved outA laterally asfwill hereinafter appear. is connected by means of a link free end of a second crank 16 similar' in size and shape to the crank arm 14. rlhis crank arm 16 is mounted upon one end of a'shaft 17, the` opposite end of whichis squared at 18 and is connected with the throttle valve crank arm 19 as shown."A rhisconstruction '-"insures equal or proportional angular'move ment of the two shafts 11 and 17.v
The crank arms 14 and lvtogether with. the link 15 are mounted' within aV chamber: 20 vin the side wallof the throttle box andA the shaft 17 passes through substantiallyy asteam-tight connection Ain the partition to the interior'ofthe throttle box which is justV above the dry pipe connection. It will thus be seen that lwhenv vthe throttle valve is closed and Athere is no steampressure VwithinY thedry pipe the actuating shaft 11v may be removed from the sleeve 12 to permit inspecdanger of the steam escaping.
rIn Figs.A t and 5, thereis illustrated a slight modication showing a dierent man-v `Al projection 23 within the chamber limits the movement of the upper crank arm and adjacent the shaftk 17 in the lower part of the chamber is provided a removable plug 24 permitting access to the connection between the link or crank arm and shaft 17. The construction, method of use and operation of this modification are substantially the same as abovedescrihed in connection with the modification shown in Fig. 1.
' It is believed that the construction, operation andmethod of use of devices of this character are clear from the above description and that a further discussion thereof is unnecessary. It will be seen` that the 'in-1 vention is of'simple and practical construc-v ytion particularly adapted for Vuse in'connection.. with lift'throttle valves on locomotive boilers having relatively low steamV domes. I Without Yfurther analysis,`the foregoing will so fullyreveal the gist of this invention' thatothers can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it forfvariousapplicaa substantially steam@y riihe actuating rod ,111.;
The other end'of the crank arm 14 15 tothev tions without' omitting certain features that".
rare intended to be'cofmprehendedwithin the Vmeaning and range of equivalency of the following claims. Having thus described our invention what we'claiin as new and desire to secure yby Letters .Patent is: L
