STEAM-BOILER- Application filed December 31,1906. Serial No. 350.231.
To a, whom it may concern.
I Be it known that I, CHARLES G. WIELAND, r
a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hoboken, in'the county. of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
It has been a long 'felt want in the-con- 'struction of steam-boilers, to limit the amount of'water in th'boiler for the purproducing steam in as short as possible time. In the diverse attem ts to design boilers with this end in that the sup ly of feed-water to the boiler lllem of great importance.
It is now the object of the present inven-- tion to produce a boiler simple of construction and of a very small water-space, which-space according to the requirements, while at the same time devices are supplying feed-water to the same for the purpose of retaining the level of the water in the oiler approximately at a constant height.
The invention is illustrated in the panying drawings, in which 7 igure 1 is a central vertical cross-section of the boiler with its feed'ng device, Fig. 2 a perspective view Vice, Fig. 3 a detail view of the automatic valve, operating the feeding device,.Fi-g. 4 a v1ew of the ressure-regulating'valve, Fig. 5a modi cation of a-"detail of.con struction.
1 in Fig.1 is a boiler of the vertical type, walled-in in the inclosure 2, having the usual fire-box 3, with the ate 4 and theash-pit '5. For the urpose of increasin the heating surface, no spaces 6 are provi ed, connected by means of passages? to the chimney.
A ball 8 is centrally located within-the boiler, closed at its lower end and opencat its upper. end. A rod 9, secured thereto, passes through a stuflln box 10, and is provided 11 andscreW-threads 12 in mesh with justable, so that its distance from the ot tom of .the' boiler may beregulated at will, While guides 14, secured to the bell, keep the bell in its central position. A manhole 15 in the hell 8 .is provided 'for the-purpose of clenni the same, when necessary, and this manl' le coincides jwith a similar manhole 16 1 oil the boiler 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
the boiler, having a v1ew, 1t Wasfou'nd crank 25, carried by .29, directed of a part of the feeding de-' normal height, the
Patented May 14, 1907.
A feed-water pipe is shown at 17, andleads to the cylindrical receptacle 18, located at'a convenient point near the boiler, it is entirely closed and contains aniovable cylinder 19, rotatably carried by the top of the casing 18 by means of a shaft bine-wheel 21 is secured, so that with the rotation of this turbine-wheel 21, the cylinder 19'withi'n the casing 18 is caused to rotate. This casing is furthermore provided with a steam-pipe 22, leading to the steam spac v of valve 23, a valve ror .4, connected to the bella bracket 26, secured to of the boiler, while a rod 27 which is pivotally the inner walls forms a connection to a hollow float 28, nor-' mallyresting on the surface of the Water in the boiler and of annular shape, so that its movement will not be interfered with by the friction along the inn er walls of the boiler 1 and the outer walls'of the bell 8.
The steam-pipe 22 is provided with a jet tangentially against the blades 30 of. the turbine-wheel 21, so that steam, passing out through the jet 29, causes the rotation ofv the cylinder 19. A supply-pipe 31 leads to a suitable reservoir for the feed water.
The cylinder 19 shows a number of peripheral'ports, one of which 32 coincides with and is on the same level as the feed-Water pipe 17, a second one 33 coincides with the supply-pipe 31, while a third port 34 coincides-with the steam pipe 22.
The casin 18 has afrelease-valve 35, connected to a ever 36, i-voted to a lug 37, secured to'the top of t e casing 18. A finger 38,- extending downwardly from the lever 36 is in-the path of a cam 39 on the upper rim of the cylinder 19, in such. a way that whenever the cam 39 engages the finger 38, the valve is opened, while any excess of the pressure within the cylinder 18 will the valve to close again.
When the boiler is filled with water to its float 28 keeps the valve 23 normally closed, Whenever the level of'the Water should sink below its normal height, the'valve 23 is opened and, in the first in-' stance, steam will be emitted from the jet 29 and cause the rotation of the cylinder 19.
As soon as port 34 now coincides With the steam-pipe22, the pressure within the boiler is communicated to thecylinder 19, and the 20, to which shaft a turcause I I OO Ito
port 82 of this cylinder simultaneously coinaiding with the feed-water pipe 17 the water contained in the cylinder 19 is fed by gravity to the boiler 1. In the further course of the rotation of the cylinder 19, ports 32 and 34 will leave their respective pipes, and the cam 39causes the opening of the valve 35, so that steam will escape and the space within the cylinder have no more than atmospheric pressure. Since port 33in the rotation of the cylinder 19 is now coinciding with the supply-pipe 31, feed-water enters the cylin-' der until in the further rotation of the same the cam 39 leaves the lever 38, and the ports 32 and 34 coincide again, respectively, with the feed-water pipe 17 and the steam-pipe 22. This play is repeated until the level of the water rises to its normal height, when the float is lifted and closes the valve 23.
Fig. -5 illustrates a modification of the inner hell, adapted to determine the. waterspace in the steam boiler. This bell 40 is provided with an interior bell 42, communieating by means of a pipe 41 through the bottom of the bell 40 with the Water space of the boiler. The float 28 in this modification is located within the interior bell 42. A
The water space of the boiler may be regulated to any predetermined degree by lifting or lowering the bell 8.
As new and useful is claimed and desired to be secured by-Letters Patent of the United- States 1. In a steam boiler, the combination with a waterspace, of rotatable means capable of interruptedly feeding water to said space, means adapted to operate said water-feed ng means, and automatic means for controlling said operating means. i
2. The combination with a steam boiler, of a receptacle, a connection between said receptacle and the Water-space of said boiler, a connection between said-rece tacle and the steam-space of said boiler, a va ve controlling said steam connection, a floatcontrolling said valve, a cylinder within said receptacle and adapted to be rotated by opening said valve,
a supply-pipe connected to said receptacle,
ports in said cylinder and adapted to alternately coincide with said water connection, steam. connection and supply pipe, and a valve in said receptacle and adapted to be operated by said cylinder.
Signed at New York,.in the county of New York and State of New York, this 17th day of December, A. D. 1906.
