GATE-LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARVID SAARI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crosby, in the county of Crow Wing and State of IVIinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gate latches and its object is to produce a simple, practical and efficient latch for swinging gates which is operative from either side. Another object is to produce a gate latch whose levers may be locked together when desired in order that the gate may be securely locked in closed position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in theclaims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings which form a part of said speciiication and in which 7 Fig. 1 is a front view of my gate latch.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference character 1 designates the gate post past which the free end of the gate swings. To the gate post 1 I secure the base plate 3 which carries the keeper 4 that retains the free ends of the levers 5, 6 in operative position; said levers being pivotally arranged upon the yoke 7 also carried by the base plate 3, and connected by a spring 8. The gate is provided with the bolt 9 adapted, as the gate swings, to pass between the keeper 4 and yoke 7 and to engage one of the levers 5 or 6 and so forcing the free end of the lever so engaged toward the other lever. After the bolt 9 has passed out of engagement with the lever first encountered the same is again drawn to normal position by the spring 8 and the said bolt may encounter the other lever which will be retained against movement in the direction of the said bolt by means of the keeper 4. The gate is now automatically secured against accidental opening by means of the said levers 5, 6. To open the gate one of the levers is manually moved out of the way to permit passage of the bolt 9 of the gate.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. a, 1917.
Application filed January 22, 1916. Serial No. 73,554.
The base plate 3 aforesaid is raised at one I as clearly shown in Fig. 1; said extension 13 being olfset as at 15. I/Vhen the gate is in closed position with the bolt 9 between the levers 5, 6 the eyes lt, 1 1 may be securely locked together by a padlock, ior otherwise, thereby securing the gate permanently in closed position.
What is claimed is 1. A gate latch comprising a base plate terminating in a slotted casing and secured to a gate post, a yoke carried by said, base plate, a keeper carried by said base plate, oppositely disposed levers pivotally arranged upon said yoke and having their free ends normally in engagement with said keeper; said levers being formed with projections, one of which is offset, normally disposed in the same plane and terminating in alined eyes, a spring disposed in said casing. and pins connecting said-spring and the said levers and passing through the slotted portions of said casing.
2. A gate latch comprising a base plate terminating in a slotted casing and secured to a gate post, a yoke carried by said base plate, a keeper carried by said base plate, levers pivotally arranged upon said yoke and having their free ends normally inengagement with said keeper; said levers being formed with projections normally disposed in the same plane and terminating in alined eyes, a spring disposed in the said casing and connection between said spring,
and the said levers and passing through the slotted portions of said casing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing. witnesses.
ARVID SAARI.
