To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA D. BLOOM- rrnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping- Hoods, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a hood adapted to be worn upon the head when sleeping and carrying means for holding the mouth of the wearer closed, whereby breathing through the mouth is prevented.

- An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient and comfortable in use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of the hood, which may be formed of an open fabric, such as gauze, net, or any other suitable material, adapted to be laundried. Secured to this body portion, by stitching or the like is a front section 5, which is formed of an open fabric, as shown. The front section 5' has a tuck 6 formed therein and stitched at 7 and this tuck may be released by removing the stitching. By this means the size of the hood may be somewhat adjusted.

Secured to the top portion of the front section 5 is a strip of relatively nonextensible fabric or tape 8, to the lower ends of which are attached a longitudinally elastic band 9, preferably formed of rubber, while it may be made of elastic webbing. The connection between the end or ends of the elastic band 9 and the strip 8 is preferably lower end of the hood and has its ends extending forwardly therebeyond for a substantial distance. i

The numeral 9 designates a relatively non-elastic flexible chin engaging band, secured to the band 9, and forming therewith a chin receiving pocket.

Surrounding the band 9 is a loop 13, adapted to receive the ends of the tape 12, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.

As clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 1, a tape 14 is attached to the rear portion of the tape 12, inwardly thereof, forming a loop for receiving the plait of the wearer.

In use, the device is placed on the head, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, with the elastic strip 9 beneath and the band 9' in advance of the chin, as shown in Fig. 1. If the wearer has a plait, it is passed through the plait receiving loop 14:, thereby holding the device securely in place upon the wearer, when the ends of the tape 12 are passed through the loop 13 and then tied. Some degree of success is obtained by omitting the plait receiving loop.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion to receive the head of the wearer and formed of open fabric, a relatively non-extensible strip secured to the upper portion of the body portion at its forward edge, a longitudinally elastic band connected with the nonextensible strip and adapted to be passed beneath the chin, a loop carried by the elastic band, a tape secured to the lower end of the body portion and extending forwardly therebeyond and adapted to be passed about the neck and tied to the loop, and a plait re ceiving loop secured to the rear portion of the tape.

A device of the character described, comprising a body portion to receive the head of the wearer and formed of open fabric, a relatively nonextensible strip secured to the upper portion of the body portion at its forward edge a. longitudinally elastic band connected with the non-extensible strip and adapted to be passed beneath the chin, a loop carried by the elastic band, and atape secured to the lower end of the body portion and extending forwardly therebeyond and adapted to be passed about the neck and tied to the loop.
