Be it known that I, SAMUEL J HERMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to boiler cleaners of the blower type, and has particularreference to a construction applicable to a certain type of water tube boilers. This type is characterized by the arrangement of the tubes in series of groups connected at opposite ends to cylindrical headers, while a series of battles arranged between groups serve to direct the combustion gases from one group of tubes to another.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction with which all of the tubes in the several groups may be readily cleaned without endangering the baflies arranged between groups. It is a further object to cover the tube area with the fewest number of blower units, and with these objects in view the invention comprises the construction as hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a boiler of the type to which my improvements are applied; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof.
A is the furnace, which is in the form of a rectangular chamber within which are arranged a series of groups of water tubes B, each group being connected at opposite ends to cylindrical headers C and the latter be ing suitably connected to a steam drum D. As shown, these groups are arranged in two adjacent vertical rows and two adjacent inclined rows, each group consisting of closelynested tubes with baffle plates E closing the spaces between said groups. To clean the tubes of the several groups, I have arranged a series of rotative blower tubes which extend through the furnace wall at various points and a number of these blower tubes extend between rows of tube groups. Thus by providing jets which may be directed oppositely from the same blower tube the groups of water tubes on opposlte sides thereof may be cleaned. It is, however, necessary to avoid impingement of the jets against the baffle plates and as these are arranged on one side of the tube groups, the battles in one row will be nearer the plane of the blower tube than those of the adjacent row. I have therefore arranged the jets on that side of the blower tube adjacent to the batlies spaced so as to leave blanks opposite the baffles, while on the opposite side of the blower tube there are a larger number of jets to cover the entire water tube area. This necessitates a stop or limiting device preventing the rotation of the blower tube through more than an angle of 180.
In detail F are the rotative blower tubes, which extend transversely of the water tubes in a plane intermediate adjacent rows of groups. These blower tubes pass through the furnace wall and are suitably supported inside the furnace chamber by bearings (not shown). On one side of each blower tube there are arranged intermittently rows of jet nozzles G which cover the tubes of the respective groups, and during the rotation of the blower tube will sweep a predetermined area. On the opposite side of each blower tube there are also jet nozzles H, but these are more limited in number and are so arranged as to impinge upon the water tubes intermediate the baflies E, leaving blank spaces in the blower tube opposite said baffies. Outside of the furnace each blower tube F has a swivel connection with a steam supply conduit I, and suitable means is provided for rotating the tube, such as a sheave J and chain K. The rotative movement is limited to 180 by any suitable means, such as attachment of the chain at one point to the periphery of the sheave, as indicated at J.
lVith the construction as described in use all portions of the water tubes may be cleaned by the rotative adjustment of the blower tubes without danger of injury to the baffles, and by reason of my improvement a relatively small number of units is required to cover the entire area.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with groups of tubes arranged in adjacent rows with baffle plates intermediate the adjacent groups at one side of the row, of a blower tube extending between rows transversely of said groups and parallel to said baffles, jet nozzles upon opposite sides of said. blower tube dissimilar-1y distributed. the nozzles on one side covering the area of each entire group of tubes and the nozzles on the opposite side being limited to a portion of each group and avoiding c the baflles, and means for rotatively adjusting said blower tube limited to a partial revolution thereof.
2. The combination with a plurality of groups of tubes, and baffles arranged between adjacent groups of a blower tube extending transversely adjacent to said tube 10 groups and parallel to said bafiies, said blower tube having an interrupted series of jet orifices, disposed opposite said groups, the interruptions in said series being opposite said baffles. 1
