citizen of the Uni-ted States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aste-Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescript ion of the invent-ion, such as will onable others skilled in till. art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a waste basket made of sheet metal. It is the object and purpose of my invention to make a structure of this character which shall be very strong and durable and can be produced at an extremely low cost. A further obj ect of the invention resides in various novel and useful constructions and arrangements of parts for producing the device, understanding of which may be had from the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings in which;

The receptacle ortion of the waste hasket is formed of lbur sides 1, making substantially right angular corners with each other. Each of the sides at its lower edge is turned back upon itself as shown at 2, and a. bottom 3 having turned down lips 4:

sides 1 said lips 4 passing between the return portion 2 and the side 1 as shown in Fig. Each side at its upper edge is also turned outwardly in a horizontal direction making a horizontal ledge 5, the metal being then turned downwardly to form a short vertical section (3 and then turned again inwardly for a short distance as indicated at 7 to form a head in this manner making a smooth finish at the upper edges of the sides of the receptacle.

The sides are brought together so that their vertical edges contact with each' other, an angle brace having legs 8 and 9 in the meantime being inserted between the upper and lower parts 5 and T of the head at each end of a side 1 as shown in Fig. 3. To secure the adjacent edges of sides 1 together a strip 10 having legs bent at right angles to each other is brought against the sides 1 and is spot welded or otherwise suitably secured thereto to pern'ianently fasten the sides together at their corners and making a rigid receptacle which may be used to receive waste paper and the like.

At each corner of the receptacle thus formed a leg is secured. Each leg is made of sheet metal having two sides 11 located at right angles to each other. the free ends of each leg being turned inwardly at right. angles as shown at 12 for a short distance and then turned again at right angles to form strips 13 which lie substantially paral- The parts 13 are entered under the edges of the legs of the angle connection l0 and making a very firm and rigid connection of the leg to the receptacle. The leg is forced on to the receptacle until its upper end bears against the angle brace heretofore described, and said angle brace in this manner is pushed upwardly against the upper side of the ledges 5 and firmly retained against movement. To complete the receptacle finisl'iing corner tips 14 are applied and attached by bending down the lip 15 as shown in Fig. 1. Each supporting leg at its lower end is also prov'idcdwith a tip 16 of any suitable construction to protect the floor or other surface on which the basket rests.

This waste basket may be made of sheet metal. all parts being stamped and formed by simple operations. The assembly of the rib.

The construction outlined of course may be used with other devices than waste baskets and I do not desire to .be limited in any manner otherwise than is required by the terms of the claims which define the invention.

I claim 1. In combination a receptacle having sheet metal sides, a bottom for the receptacle interposed between and connecting the sides adjacent their lower edges, an outwardly turned bead formed at the upper edge of each side, a leg ofsheet metal at each corner of the receptacle, each leg comprising two sides lying at an angle to each other, at the edges of which sections are bent inwardly and then back substantially parallel to the sides, and'means on said sides of the receptacle adjacent the corners of the receptacle between which and said sides of the receptacle said latter sections of the legs are received and frictionally retained with the upper ends of the legs stopped by said beads, substantially as described. p

In combination, a receptacle having sheet metal sides, an angle member at each corner of the receptacle having legs contacting with and permanently secured adjacent the corner of said angle member to th adjacent sides of. the receptacle, an outwardly turned bead at the upper edgeot' each side. a bottom for the receptacle and open-ended sheet metal supporting legs having parts received under the legs of the angle mem bcrs at each corner oi" the receptacle, said supporting legs, being forced into position from the lowerends bf and .over the angle 1 rembers' and frictionally retained thereon,

substantially as described.

In combination, a receptacle having sheet metal 'sides, means for securing the sides together at the corners of the receptacle, an outwardly turned open-ended bead at the upper edge of each side, an angle reinforce having legs extending into the ends of adjacent heads at each corner of the receptacle, and a leg secured at-each corner of the receptacle with the upper ends thereof engaging against said reinforces, substantially as described.

4. In combination, a receptacle having sheet metal sides, an angle member having legs contacting with and secured to adjacent sides of the receptacle at each corner thereof, an outwardly turned open-ended head at the upper edge of each side, an angle reinforce having legs extending into'the ends of.

legs formed of sheet metal-having sections received between the legs of the corner angle connecting members and the sides of the receptacle, the upper ends of the legs engaging against the corner angle reinforces, and a. finishing member secured at each uppereorner of the receptacle;

5. In combination, a receptacle having slieet metal sides, an angle member having legs contacting with and secured to adjacent sides of the "receptacle at each corner thereof, a ledge turned outwardly from the upper edge of each side, then downwardly for a short distance and then inwardly toward the said side to form an open-ended heard, an angle reinforce having legs extending into the ends of adjacent heads at each corner ofthe receptacle, 'a section turned inwardly and back upon itself at the lower-end of each side, a bottom having lips turned downwardly from each edge, said lips seating between the return sections and the sides, and legs of sheet metal located at each corner of the receptacle, having two sides lying at right angles to each other at the edges of which sections are bent inwardly and then back substantially parallel to the sides, said latter sections being received under the legs of the corner angle connecting meml'ier between said legs and the sides of the receptacle and the upper ends of the legs engaging against the angle braces, substantially as described.

(5. In combination, a receptacle having sheet metal sides, members at each side edge of each side of the rimeptacle paralleling and lying closely adjacent said sides and having an edge thereof free, an outwardly turned head at the upper edge of said side,

and a leg of sheet metal located at each corner of the receptacle having two sides lying at an angle to each other at the edges of which sections are turned back substantially parallel to the sides of the leg, said SQCti'OIlS being located between the adjacent sides of the receptacle and said members adjacent the corners of the receptacle and covering said members, and said legs extending from said beads at the upper edges of the reccp taclc to'points below the bottom of'the receptacle.
