Be it known that I, Gann HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gripper- Pads, of which the following is a specifica tion.

The object of the invention is the provision of improved means for leveling and clamping in position the gripper pads of a printing press, whereby to uniformly raise or lower the gripper pads in order to adapt them to varying thicknesses of paper.

In order that the invention may be readily understood, a preferred embodiment of the same is set forth in the accompanying drawing' and in the description based thereon. the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms, the drawing and description are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limiting` sense. In the drawingk Figure 1 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through a portion of the printing cylinder showing in side elevation the arrangement of the grippers, the gripper pads and the blanket clamping devices;

In the drawings the cylinder is indicated at 11, mounted in the usual way in the side frame of the press and cut away at 12 to provide for the mounting of the various devices by means of which the blanket or plate is clamped in position and the gripper pads are held in proper adjustable position for cooperation with the grippers themselves.

As illustrated, upon the side wall of the cut away portion 12 of the cylinder is disposed a bracket 13 serving as a support for the shaft 14, the angular position of which is controlled by means of the arm 15 and the set screw 16. Upon this shaft at proper intervals are mounted the supports 17 for the blanket clamp 18 and the gripper pad 19,

these supports being held in adjusted position by means of the clamping screw 20 as will be readily understood. The shaft 21 serves as a support for the grippers 22, mounted in the usual manner to cooperate with the gripper' pad 19.

The gripper pad 19 is an angular pl ate of aluminum or other suitable material zuid comprises a horizontal portion 23 and a vertical portion 24l arranged at substantially right angles thereto. The upper face of the horizontal portion 23 of the pad forms a contact surface between which and the gripper 22 the sheet is arranged to be gripped, while the vertical portion 24 extends parallel to and in contact with the rear face of the gripper' pad support 17 and is proifided with a slot 25 for the accommodation of a set screw 2G, the end of which is threaded into the head of the gripper pad support 17.

It will be readily understood that by loosening` the set screw 26 the gripper pad 19 is left free to be adjusted radially of the cylinder to the proper height to adapt the same for use with diiferent thicknesses of paper, and after adjustment the tightening of the set screw 26 will serve to retain the gripper pad in adjusted position.

The adjustment of the gripper pads individually may be combined with a collectivI simultaneous adjustment of the gripper pad supports throughout the length of the cylinder in any approved manner, if desired.

I claim:

1. The combination with a printing press cylinder, and the grippers, of a shaft, arms projecting from said shaft, a gripper pad carried by each of said arms, means to adjustably position the pads on said arms radially of the cylinder.

2. The combination with a printing press cylinder, and the gripper-s, of a shaft, arms projecting radially from said shaft, grijipcr pads having a pin and slot connection with the arms whereby to position the pads longitudinally of the arms and radially of the cylinder.

3. The combination with a printing press cylinder, and the grippers, of a shaft, arms projecting radially from said shaft, gripmr per pads having a portionl arranged to over1N and another signed my name in the presence ol3 two suhscribing Witnesses.
