To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wheeled toys.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved wheeled toy, adapted to travel on a cord or string, which has a movable figure and the appearance of a hand car actuated by the figure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side view of my improved toy supported by a string track.
Fig. II is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Figs. I and III.
Fig. III is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Figs. I and II.
Fig. IV is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 4l l of Figs. I and II.
Fig. V is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 55 of Figs. I and II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a string or cord which constitutes the support or track for my improved toy.
The frame of my improved toy preferably consists of a pair of side bars 2 formed of sheet metal stampings, the bars being offset at 3 to provide forks at the ends of the frame adapted to receive the wheels 4: and 1. The bars 2 are secured together near their front ends by the rivets 5. The bars are spaced the greater portion of their Specification of Letters Patent.

length to receive the body member 6 and the lever 7 between them (see Fig. II).
The body member 6 is supported by the pivot 8, the side bars being provided with upwardly projecting portions 9 for the pivot 8. The lever 7 is supported by the pivot 10 to oscillate between the frame bars. The body member 6 is connected to the upper end of the lever 7 by means of the link-like arm portions 11 pivoted to the body at 12 and to the lever at 13.
The axle 14 of the rear wheel a is provided with a crank 15 which is connected by the pitman link 16 to the lower end of the lever 7, the link being connected to the lever by the pivot 17.
I provide leg portions formed of inner sections 18 and outer sections 19 pivotally connected to each other at 20, the inner sections being mounted on the body pivot 8 and the outer sections on the pitman link pivot 17 With the parts thus arranged, when the rear wheel is turned the body is oscillated or rocked back and forth and the legs are also moved, giving the general appearance of the figure operating the toy like a velocipede.
A counterweight 21 is suspended by a link or rod 22 mounted at one side of the frame on the pivot 23. The rod is offset at 24; below the pivot. and inclined so that the counterweight lies substantially in the vertical plane of the body. The providing of the rod on the side of the body and the offset permit the rod being collapsed at the side of the body for packing.
With the parts thus arranged the toy is supported to travel on the cord or string and may be operated by securing one end of the string to a. support, as to a chair, door knob, or the like, and raising and lowering the other end so that the toy runs back and forth on the string.
My improved toy is an attractive and interesting one and at the same time is very simple and economical in structure and is quite strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a toy, the combination of a frame comprising a pair of bars disposed side by side and having oppositely offset ends providing wheel forks, a pair of grooved wheels adapted to travel on a cord disposed in said forks, an axle for the rear wheel provided with a crank at one end, a lever pivoted between said frame bars, a pitman link connecting the lower end of said lever to said crank, a figure member comprising a body portion pivotally mounted between said frame bars, arm portions pivotally connected to said body and to the upper end of said lever, leg portions comprising pivotally connected inner and outer sections, the inner sections being mounted on the body pivots on the outer sides of said frame bars, and the outer sections being mounted on the pivot connecting said lever to said pitman link, and a counterweight suspended by a rod pivotally mounted on the side of the frame below said body pivot, said rod being offset at its upper end and inclined below the offset.
2. In a toy, the combination of a frame comprising a pair of bars disposed side by side and having oppositely offset ends providing wheel forks, a pair of grooved wheels adapted to travel on a cord disposed in said forks, an axle for the rear wheel provided with a crank at one end, a lever pivoted between said frame bars, a pitman link connecting the lower end of said lever to said crank, a figure member comprising a body portion pivotally mounted between said frame bars, arm portions pivotally connected to said body and to the upper end of said lever, leg portions comprising pivotally connected inner and outer sections, the inner sections being mounted on the body pivots on the outer sides of said frame bars, and the outer sections being mounted on the pivot connecting said lever to said pitman link.
3. In a toy, the combination of a frame forked at its ends, grooved wheels adapted to travel on a cord disposed in said forks, an axle for the rear wheel provided with a crank, a lever pivoted on said frame, a pitman link connecting the lower end of said lever to said crank, a figure member comprising a body portion pivotally mounted on said frame, an arm portion pivotally connected to said body and to the upper end of said lever, and a leg portion comprising pivotally connected sections, the inner section being mounted on the body pivot and the outer section on the pivot connecting said lever to said pitman link, and a counterweight pivotally mounted on said frame to be suspended below said wheels.
4-. In a toy, the combination of a frame forked at its ends, grooved wheels adapted to travel on a cord disposed in said forks, an axle for the rear wheel provided with a crank, a lever pivoted on said frame, a pitman link connecting the lower end of said lever to said crank, a figure member comprising a body portion pivotally mounted on said frame, an arm portion pivotally connected to said body and to the upper end of said lever, and a leg portion comprising pivotally connected sections, the inner section being mounted on the body pivot and the outer section on the pivot connecting said lever to said pitman link.
