Be it known that T, JOSEPH R. lVloRANDo, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching- Bag Platforms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel punching-bag platform. It pertains particularly to that kind of vpunching-bags which are secured. to the wall and may advantageously be used for home exercise.
Heretofore punching-bags of this description were usually mounted directly upon the wooden platforms. The rebounding of the bag when punched was practically in but one direction7 the bag rebounding simply in and out and making a disagreeable noise. The present invention consists in a novel punching-bag platform which is provided with a helical spring within which the narrow inner portion of the punching-bag is mounted. This arrangement permits the punching-bag to rebound practically in every direction and the rebounding is much Igreater on account of the force imparted to the helical spring when the bag is punched because the said spring is temporarily tensioned by the punching of the bag. Furthermore the rebounding is of a more agreeable nature. Another important feature of the novel punching-bag is that it works practically noiselessly.
Near the base board upon which the punching-bag platform is mounted an adjusting device is provided which renders it possible to move the platform with the bag to the right or left. The adjusting device permits of mounting the punching-bag in any limited space where there is not enough room for exercise. The adjusting device is released and the bag simply turned to the right or left and the adjusting device again secured when the bag will be ready for exercise. When not in use the adjusting device may be released and the punching-bag turned in the opposite direction toward the wall when it will be out ofthe way.
In order to render the invention entirely clear reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents in top plan view a punching-bag platform which embodies in desirable form the present improvements.
Fig. Q is a side elevation of the same with certain parts in section.
Fig. 3 shows in plan view detailed parts.
Similar characters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
Tn the drawing L represents an elongated base board upon which the platform is mounted that supports the punching-bag. Upon the lower portion of the base board a bracket b is secured by means of screws. The bracket l) has an integral iiange b1 which is formed into a bearing or sleeve c. The bearing houses a short pin or shaft d which is tight in the bearing or sleeve c and eX- tends vertically when the bag is mounted. On the pin or shaft there is mounted an iron bar c by means of an integral sleeve el. The sleeve may be moved up and down on the pin or shaft CZ for adjustment and is secured in the desired position by means of a set screw The iron bar c is slightly bent in an upward direction and supports two iron bars g, L one at each side which are secured thereto by the screws z', 1. The bars g, L eX- tend first in an upward direction as the bar c and then they are bent again in a somewhat more horizontal direction. From a certain point the bars g, z, are bent outwardly, as shown in Figs. l and 3, and then are curved in the form of a section of a circle as shown at g1, 71.1, in Fig. l. `Within the curved end portions g1, 71.1 of the bars g, h, a circular wooden vplatform is mounted by means of screws jl, jg, js, jt. To the bottom portion of this platform a helical spring 7c is secured by means of bolts Z. This helical spring has the narrowest winding on the platform while the other windings gradually increase in diameter so that the bottom winding /cl is the largest which is secured with its end to the adjoining winding so as to present a flush surface. l/Vithin this helical spring the punching-bag m is mounted by means of its top narrow end m1. To the top end of the punching-bag portion m1 a "i i rope n is secured which passes through a central opening in the platform and a bushing 0 is provided in the said opening. The bolts Z also secure on the top of the platform three flanges p, p, p on the top of which is formed a sleeve g through the opening of which the rope n passes. The rope is tied into a knot nl so as to hold the punchingbag secure in the helical spring.
ln order to render it possible to adjust i the punching-bag and move it to the right or left so that it may be mounted in any limited space an adjusting device is provided. For this purpose an iron bar r is secured with its outer end to the side surface of the platform j by means of a screw r1. The bar r first rises vertically and then is bent nearly horizontally over toward the base board a as shown in Fig. 2. At the end of the bar r the adjusting device is mounted on the said bar and the base board. rihe adjusting device consists of two iron flanges s, t. Under the flange s there is a little iron bar u and on the bar t a similar iron bar QJ having a downward hook @l with a threaded end portion that passes tl rough the bar u to keep the bars s, t in position. Upon the little bar U the inner end of the long bar r is located and secured thereto by a screw r2. The bars s, t, u, o and the end of the long bar r have coinciding openings through which passes a bolt 10 forming part of the wing or thumb screw which unites all these elements. The inner ends of the bars s, t are curved as shown in Fig. 2 and adapted to slide on the bar g/ which is secured with its ends to the base board a by means of screws while the body of the bar y is of nearly semi-circular shape, as shown in Fig. 1. lf it is desired to move the platform to the right or left the wing screw is loosened and if necessary the screw f in the sleeve el then the whole device may be shifted to the right or left on the semi-circular bar 3/ of the adjusting device and the sleeve Z of the support for the platform.
From the description of the novel punching-bag platform it is evident that the device is rather simple in construction. The base board supports a frame of iron bars to the curved ends of which the wooden .platform is secured. The platform supports the helical spring which carries the punching-bag and the adjusting device is in connection with the platform and the base board rendering cooperation between the said device andthe frame easily possible.
I claim as my invention:
1. A punching-bag platform comprising a base board, a frame of iron bars secured thereto and having curved end portions, a platform mounted between the curved end portions of the frame, and a helical spring attached to the platform and adapted to support the bag.
2. A punching-bag platform comprising a base board, a frame of iron bars secured thereto and having curved end portions, a wooden platform mounted between the end portions of the frame, and a helical spring attached to the platform and adapted to support the bar, said spring having the narrowest winding on the platform and other windings gradually increasing in diameter with the end secured to the adjoining winding.
3. A punching-bag platform comprising a base board, a frame of iron bars movably secured thereto and having curved end portions, a wooden platform mounted between the curved end portions of the frame, a helical spring attached to the platform and adapted to support the bag, and an adjusting device in connection with the platform and base board.

A punching-bag platform comprising a base board, a frame of iron bars movably secured thereto spreading out and having curved end portions, a wooden platform mounted between the end portions of the frame, a helical spring attached to the platform and adapted to support the bag, andl an adjusting device composed of a curved bar secured to the base, a sliding device with -wing screw thereon, and a long bar secured to the sliding device and to the platform.
A punching-bag platform comprising a base board, a bracket with bearing on its lower portion, a permanent pin in the bearing, a frame of iron bars movably mounted on said pin, a wooden platform with helical spring in the iron frame, a curved bar secured to the top portion of the base, a sliding device with wing screw thereon, and a bar secured to the sliding device and tothe front end of the platform to move the device to the right or left.
6. A punching-bag comprising a base board, a movable frame with wooden platform and helical spring supported by the base, a punching-bag with narrow inner end within the helical spring, a rope on said inner end of the bag passing through the platform and forming a securing knot at the top, and an adjusting device secured with one end to the platform.
