Description
MICHAEL MONEIL, 0F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
INVALID-BED.
Application filed November 22,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MCNEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county o and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in In'- valid-Beds, of which the following is al full v and clear specication. v
My invention relates to improvements 1n invalid beds, and is especially designed for use in hospitals or in sick-rooms an by persons who are bed ridden but still have the use of their hands.
My invention consists chiefly of a toilet fxedly located beneath a bed, and means located within reach of the occupant of the bed for {iushin said toilet, a mattress upon said bed provi ed with an aperture having a sliding section, and means within reach of the said occupant for opening and closing said aperture, the details of which will be more fully hereinafter explained and pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to produce a bed of the character hereinbefore referred to, which will be easy of operation, in action and that can be manufactured cheaply.
With these objects in view I will describe the device in its preferred form.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improve bed complete.
Fig. 2, is a broken plan view of the bedstead and mattress, the working parts being shown in dotted lines, likewise some of the framework thereof.
Similar characters of reference denote like parts in each of the views.
1, 1s the frame of the bed or what is better known as the bedstead, and 2, is the body of the mattress.
3, is an aperture in the center of the mattress into which is slidingly itted the section of mattress 4, said section resting upon the supporting bars 5, which are secured to and held in place by the cross trusses 6, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the said cross trusses 6, being secure in any approved ame of the bed 1.
A bracket 7 is securedto the frame of the'bed at 8, by screws, or otherwise, and a lever 9, is fulcrumed thereto.
One end of the lever 9, is operatively attached to the mattress section 4, and its manner to the Specification of Letters Patent.

opposite end is pivotally connected to the in a suitable member 11, upon the frame 1, at 12.
A flexible ap'ron of any suitable material forms a connecting cover 13, for closin that portion of aperture 3, which woulfgl remain open when the mattress section 4, occupied'that end of the aperture 3, nearest the head of the bed, this exible apron 13, being attachedto the body of the mattress at one end and its other end being attached to the sliding mattres hcation 4, it will readily be seen that when properly attached at its two ends as above described, that it will be tightly stretched over the lower end of the aperture 3, when mattress section 4, occupies its upper or closed position.
A toilet bowl 14, is located directly beneath the aperture 3, and is provided with both water supply and sewer connections in the usual manner.
The toilet bowl 14, is provided with the ordinary flush tank 15, which is operated by the handled chain 16, in the ordinary manner.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The occupant of the bed being unable to summon an attendant or. not wishing to,
as the case may be, simply supports himself upon his shoulders and feet enough to relieve the greater portion of his weight from the movable mattress section, operates the rod 10, in the proper direction to slide the mattress section 4, downwardly along the aperture 3, the iexible a ron 13, dropping into the lower end of t e aperture 3, and folding up4 therein, and leaving the upper end of the aperture 3, in open communication with the toilet bowl 14, through which the patient is able to accomplish his or her requirements, the bowl being iushed at will by simply pulling the handled chain 16, in the ordinary manner, after which the aperture may again be closed by operating the rod 10, in the reverse direction froml that required to open it.
Having thus described I claim and desire to secure ent is 1. In an invalid bed, means forming a bed having a vertical aperture, a toilet apparatus with the bowl under a part of said aperture, a bed section slidingly mounted for horizontal movement in said aperture to cover and uncover said' bowl, and a hanmy invention what by Letters Patdle beside the bed and connected to said bed section for operating said section to bed section for operating the said section cover and uncover the bowl, and means to cover and uncover the bowl. within reach of the occupant of the bed for 2.
