acitizen of the United States, residing at Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping-'lools for Packing-Rings, of which the follmvingis a full, clear, and exact description, ret'erenee being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in gripping tools for packing rings;
andit consists in the novel features of construction more fully set forth in the specifieationand pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool by means of which a iistomhead packing ring of the resilient split-band type may be-scizedor gripped and deposited in the piston'hjead groove designed to receive the same after which the piston with its ring maybe readily insertcd or' pushed into the cylinder with a 'rninimun'i loss of time and a mininnnn'anionnt of iii-.tnipnlation. With one end of the band thus anchored to the block 3, and an intermediate portion gripped between the nose n of the dog and the sliding block 12, it is apparent that if we first adjust the band 6 so as to just encompass the packing ring B (Fig. 2) while the latter is maintained opposite the groove of the pistonhead and then close the levers 2, 2, to the position indicated in Fig. 3, the ring will be closed or contracted so as to enter the groove of-the piston. By now lowering the piston with its ring into the cylinder until the rin comes partially opposite or within the we ls of the cylinder, the grip on the ring ma be-released and the piston and ring pus ed into the cylinder the entire distance as clearly obvious from Fig. 1 which shows the ring in the iston-head groove, and the piston shoved ar enough into the cylinder to ermitthe grip on the ri to be released and allow both piston and lung to be shoved intothe cylinder. In inserting the piston-head with the ring held contracted by the tool so as to remain in the groove of the piston, a slight pressure on the end of the piston-will force the piston and ring through the .clamp into the cylinder afterwh-ich. and when the ring comes op osite the cy'mder. walla-the gripv of the too may be slackenedand the tool "ulled away from the piston. "To quickly ad ust the band 6 to rings of difierent diameters it is desirable to overcome the natural grip or bite of the nose n on the band so that the latter may be freely and jquickl adjusted or moved between the nose an a block 12'to a point "where it will just embrace-the ring while the latter is in its expanded position (for example in Fig. 2).

Having described my invention what I claimis:
1. In a.tool of the character described, a
contractible band, a pair of pliers, a block permanently anchored to one end of the band and pivotally cou led to one of the plier jaws, a second bloc slidable along the band, a dog cooperating with said sliding block and positioned to bring the band between the do and block, links connecting said dog to t e opposite jaw of the pliers,
and a spring exerting a draft on the links for normally forcing the dog into engagement with the band and causing the band to be gripped between the dog and block.
