. APPLICATION FILED .IULY3I, I9I6..

WALTER I). LYNCH, OF ST. PAUL, .MINNESOTA.
DEVICE FOR CONTAINING AND APPLYING SHOE-POLISH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, left.
Application filed July 31. 1916. Serial No. 112,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. LYNCH, a
, citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Containing and Applying Shoe-Polish; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in devices for containing and applying shoe polish, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that polish can be conveniently applied to the shoes without soiling the hands.
A further object of the invention is to providea device of this character. comprising a flexible tube for containing the polish in paste form so that upon squeezing the tube the polish can be ejected for application to the shoe.
While the- ..device is particularly adapted for containing shoe polish it is obvious that the same can be used for applying any other substance desired.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and a1" rangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section.
' Fig. 3 is a top planview of the device with the cap removed.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the modified form of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of another modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the tube, which has its upper end closed bya top 2, said top having a. central opening 3 formed therein.
Engaged with the interior surface of the top 2 is a piece of fabric 4, said fabric hav- \4 ing its central part pressed into a cone 5 which projects through the opening 3. A cap 6 is engaged over the tube 1 and has its top 7 provided with an opening 8 to accommodate the cone 5. Suitably secured to the top 7 is a felt washer 9 the opening 10 thereof serving to receive the cone 5.
In Fig. 4 the fabric 11 is engaged on the top 2 and the cap 6 is engaged over the end of the tube so thatthe top 7 of the cap will hold the fabric in proper place. The top 7 has engaged thereon the felt washer 9 for receiving the cone 12. I
In Fig. 6 the fabric 13 is secured to the top of the tube and secured on the top is a felt washer 14, the opening of which being for the purpose of receiving the cone 15.
A cap 16 is provided and is adapted to engage over the end of the tube when the frame is not in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a device has been provided constructed in such a manner that the tube can be pressed so as to force a small quantity of the paste through the cones, whereupon the paste can be applied to the shoe and spread thereon by the felt washer, after which a polishing brush or cloth can be used.
It will be of course understood that if desired a solid tube can be employed and a follower mounted therein so as to force the paste through the cones when desired to use the device.
If desired material other than felt may be employed for making the washers, such as sponge or the like.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a tube having a restricted opening formed in its top, a fabric cone carried by the tube, a felt washer having a central opening the same size aS the top opening and positioned for receiving the cone, as and for the purpose set forth. 2. A device of the class described comprising a paste containing tube, the top of said tube having a restricted opening formed therein, a piece of fabric engaged interiorly of the top and having a cone formed centrally thereof and projected through said opening, a felt washer associated with the tube and having an opening, said cone being projected into the opening of said washer, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER D. LYNCH.
Witnesses JAMES J. MERRY, FRANK J. ROSENTHAL.
