M. FRENCH.
SAFETY ENVELOP. VAPPLICATION FILED AUG-8.1916.

- provision of an envelop adapted to be sold in I? TED STATES PATENT union.
MICHAEL FRENCH, or LIVE OAK, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-ENVELOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIoHAEL FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Live Oak, in the county of Sutter and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety envelops.
The primary object of the invention is the the form of a blank and operatively folded when designed for use. p
A further object of the invention is the provision of an envelop blank having portionsthereof suitably gummed for the prevention of tampering with the contents of the envelop when inclosingly around a missive.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts'hereinafter more around the missive and secured in position Y fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
Inthe drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to correspondingparts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a plan view of the inner side of the present envelop blank. I
Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof partially folded.
Fig. 3 is a view of the outer face of one of the sealing flaps, and,
Fig. 4 is a rear view of formed from the blank.
In arranging the present device. for. forming a safety envelop, the same broadly consists of a blank 10 formed of suitable material such as paper and comprising a rectangular main body-portion 11 with inwardly foldable end flaps 12 and 13 and inwardly foldable side flaps 14 and 15. The said side flaps 14 and 15 will be hereinafter referred to as the top and bottom flaps respectively, being adapted for interengaging with each other overlying the end flaps when the device is assembled.
The blank 10 being in the hands of the user, the missive to be sent is positioned upon the body-portion 11 and the end flap having a transverse slot 16 therethrough is the folded envelop folded inwardly upon the line 17 at one end Specification of Letters Patent.

of the body-portion while thefiap 12 is inwardly folded upon the line 18 at the opposite end thereof, being provided with a tongue 19 insertible through the slot 16 with the flap 13 overlying the flap 12.
The underlying flap 12 is provided with an adhesive upper, portion 20 adjacent its free end and having a portion 2l'thereof arranged upon the outer face of the tongue 19 while the outer face of the flap 13 is suitably gummed as at 22 inwardly of the slot 16 and also throughout one marginal portion of the said flap whereby the flaps 12 and 13 are adhesively secured together by the portions 20 and 22 when arranged in their interlocked positions with the tongue 19 positioned through the slot 16, as best illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The marginal portions 23 of the adhesive surfaces 20 and 22 upon the flaps 12 and 13 respectively, unitedly form an adhesive surface for securing the bottom flap 15 to the side flaps when the bottom flap is folded over upon the said side 'flaps in contact with such adhesive portions 23. The top flap 14 is arranged with a marginal adhesive portion 24 adapted to secure the top flap to the outer surfaces of the end flaps 12 and 13 when folded thereon, the said top flap having a tongue 25 positionable through inner and outer slots 26 and 27 provided in the bottom flap 15. The tongue 25 is arranged with a continuation of the adhesive surface 24 of the top flap whereby the tongue is secured to the outer face of the bottom flap 15 between the slots 26 and 27 while the said top blank 25 has its outer face adjacent the free end of the tongue arranged with an adhesive surface 28 for securing said tongue to the under face of the bottom flap 15. when positioned underlying the same extending through the slot 26. The flap 15 is pro vided with marginal and end adhesive sur- It will be understood that the missive at shown) arranged upon the base portion 11 is securely inclosed by the side and end flaps in the manner herein stated, arranging from the one piece blank a completed envelop securely adhesively assembled in its closed position whereby any unauthorized tampering therewith for the purpose of gaining access to the lnissive will be at once apparent to the recipient thereof. It will also be noted that in the event that access is had to the contents of the letter forming the present blank, it will be necessary to mutilate and spoil the envelop to such an extent that any such attempts would not only be rendered ap 'mrentbut of such diliiculty as torender such attempts unlikely.
What I claim as new is 5- An envelop formed from-a blank including a central body portion, a pair of end flaps, one oelng longer than the other, the longer flap adapted to overlie the shorter flap, a tongue carried by the outer end of the shorter flap, a receiving slot for the tongue formed in the longer flap, a bottom flap substantially of the form of a trun cated cone, the bottom flap having a pair of parallel slots formed therein, the outer slot being slightly longer than the inner slot, an upper flap adapted to underlie the lower flap in folded position,' atongue carried by the upper flap adapted to pass through the slots in the bottom flap With the free end thereof covered by the bottom flap, and adhesive applied to portions of the contacting faces of the parts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
' MICHAEL FRENCH.
