GEORGE JONES AND PHOEBE M. JONES, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
Application filed. August 16, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE JoNEs and PHOEBE M. JONES, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsfin Box-Fasteners, of which the following isa specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in box fasteners, the object of the invention being to provide a fastener which is especially adapted to secure a box in closed position, and is adapted for use either in connection with a box which is initially sealed or which is equipped with our improved fastener when the box is sold.
In the placing of many classes of goods on the market, and especially cereals and other breakfast foods, paper boxes or cartons are employed which are sealed, and which when once opened, expose the con tents to the air so that they become more or less affected and lose the crispness which is one 'of their prime values. With our improved fastener such a box or carton can be opened or closed in accordance with the desire of the user, and when in closed position will close the carton and protect the same.
A further object is to provide a fastener of the character stated which can be manufactured and sold at an extremely low price, and which will effectually perform the functions for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating our improved fastener in position to secure a box or carton cover in closed position. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a modified form of fastener, and Fig.5 is a fragmentary view in section through the center of the fastener shown in Fig. 4 illustrating the normal position of the latter in operation.
1 represents a box or carton having a top 2 which ordinarily is sealed, but which when the contents of the carton are desired, is cut or broken on three sides, so that the top 2 will form a hinged cover.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial N0.-45,712.
()ur improved fastener 3 is composed of sheet metal or other suitable elastic material, and is bent at right angles between its ends as shown at 4, Tongues 5 and 6 are stamped from the sheet 3, and one of these tongues 5 is appreciably wider than the other tongue 6, so that in forming the tongues two slits of different widths are formed in the plate 3, and then the metal of thetongues is stamped outwardly or oil'- set latcrally so as to provide a space between the tongues and the plate sufficient for the thickness of the material of the carton as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The tongue 6 at its inner end is bent at a right angle as shown at 7, and constitutes an integral part of the tongue 5, while the tongue 5 at its inner end is bent at a right angle as shown at 8, and forms an integral part of the plate 3 at the point of bend of the latter.
The ends of the plate 3 are preferably flared or curved away from the tongues 5 and 6 as shown at 9, and tongue 6 at its free end is preferably flared outwardly as shown, which facilitates the positioning of the material of the carton between the tongue and the plate.
In operation, the top or cover 2 is clamped between tongue 5, and one end of plate 3, while the body of the box or carton is clamped between tongue 6 and the other end of the plate 3. Whenever it is desired to open the. box or carton, the tongue 6 will operate as a finger hold, and allow the cover to be readily raised and when lowered will spring into locked position and hold the cover.
In Figs. 4 and 5, we illustrate a modification in which the plate 10 corresponding to plate 3 is substantially Hat, and tongues 11 and 12 corresponding to tongues 5 and 6 are in ls'iibstantial alinement, both being laterally'jofi set from plate 10. In other respects the construction is precisely like Fig. 3. This modified form of our invention is adapted for use in connection with boxes or cartons having two members 13 which constitute a closure, and which are in alinement when in closed position, and hence the flat form of fastener is desirable as shown in Fig. 5.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from our invention, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth,
but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fastener of the character described, comprising a plate, a relatively wide tongue stamped from the plate, and laterally oilset from the plate, and a relatively narrow tongue stamped from the metal of the plate, laterally off-set from the plate and integral with the relatively wide tongue, said relatively-marrow tongue bent at right angles at a point adjacent the relatively wide tongue, and said plate bent at right angles at its point of attachment with the relatively wide tongue, substantially as described.
2. A fastener of the character described, comprising a plate having oppositely projecting tongues stamped from the material of the plate, said tongues integral with each other and one only of said tongues connected to the plate, said plate bent at an angle at the point of juncture of said tongue, and said tongues bent at an angle relative to each other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
