Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Street-Flushing Machines, of which the following is a specilication.

My present invention relates to street flushing machines, and its object is to provide a machine of that character in which the water shall be discharged with little friction or obstruction in its flow through the pipes.

rIhis object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the machine hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure l is a side view of a street sprinkling and iiushing machine;

The water tank l is carried on the vehicle wheels 2, on a suitable frame l0, and by suitable conduits 3 the water therein flows to the horizontal flushing discharge pipe 4.-. This pipe is provided at its forward side with vents 5 through its wall whereby the water is discharged upon the surface of the street. In order that the water may with little friction or obstruction flow from the conduits, through the discharge pipe and out of the vents, this discharge pipe is formed approximately ovate in cross-section as particularly shown in Fig. 3. In passing from the conduits, the body of the stream flows along the larger-therear-portion 6 of the pipe; and those portions of such stream as are discharged through the several vents turn forwardly toward and through the vents, passing between. lportions 7 of the pipes inner surface near the vents and on opposite sides thereof, which portions 7 converge more closely'to parallelism than those portions of the pipes inner surface which are more remotej from the vents, e'. e. the rear-portion ofthe pipe. By suchconvergence of therportions 7, the water is so directed through the vents as to impart to each j et a forceful or flushing effect, and yet the flow of the body of the stream through the larger portion 6 of the pipe is not unnecessarily obstructed.

The vents are preferably elongated in cross section and are arranged parallel, each being inclined. from the horizontal as shown in Figs. l ande. The end portions ll of these vents, asshown in Fig. Ll, widen outwardly in order to impart a fan-shape to the jets. rIhe iiushing discharge pipe 4, is positioned between the rear vehicle wheels, one end of the pipe extending in frontof one rear wheel and the other end behind the other rear wheel, as shown in Fig. 2. Water is admitted to the conduits 3 by openin a suitable valve indicated at l2. In'additlon to the flushing` pipe at a sprinkling device 13 is, in the construction shown, also provided.

I claim:

l. In a machine of the character described, a discharge pipe of uniform cross section throughout its length and having vents through its wall, the portions of the pipes inner surface nearer the vents and on opposite sides thereof gradually and uniformly converging in the pipes cross-sectional direction morc closely to parallelism than portions of such inner surface more remo-te from the vents whereby the passage to the vents is lgradually contracted.
