Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 191 5.
Application filed January 15, 1915. Serial No. 2,437.
1' 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be 1t known that we, CHRISTIAN A. JOHN- son and Hans Triissnnins, citizens of the United States, residing at Laramie, in the county of Albany and State of l/Vyoming, have" invented new and useful Improve. ments in Sanders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanders such as are used on locomotives for the purpose of sanding the track, and particularly to sandof the type shown in our prior Patent No. 1,0892%, dated March 3, 191a, wherein the. nozzle is rotatably adjustable for spacing it with relation to the discharge opening and a, screen is provided to assist in regulating tl e dischar e of sand from the box and also preventing the sand from congesting and closing the discharge orifice or air passage of the nozzle. v
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction which admits of the adjustment oi the nozzle while permitting it to be locked securely against accidental displacement, so that it can not get out of alinement with the discharge opening.
it further object of the invention is to provide a construction of nozzle and sieve or screen whereby the necessity of disconnecting the nozzle for the purpose of cleaning the screen is obviated.
The invention consists oi? the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying dawing in which 2- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a sander embodying the present invention.
l'is a detail perspective view of one of the sieves or screens. Fig. 8 is a view of the washer. Fig. 4c- 18 a view of the lock nut. Referring to the drawing, 1 deslgnates a sand box of any desired size, provided in the opposite ends thereof with sand receiving openings 2, each of which isinternally threaded as shown at 3, to receive a sand supply pipe. (Not shown). In one side the box 1 is formed with an internally threaded opening l to receive the externally threaded body portion 5 of an air nozzle 6, the outer end of said body being enlarged to provide a hexagonal head '7 to receive a wrench, whereby the nozzle may be adjusted in rela- 7 tion to a discharge opening 8 formed in the opposite side of the box from the nozzle receiving opening 4. The discharge end of the nozzle is of ogee shape and the air passage 9 therein is of corresponding shape, thereby tending to defeat the backward movement of any particles of sand or foreign matter through the nozzle so as to clog the same.
.The nozzle body is provided with a groove 10 to receive a tongue or projection 11 upon a washer 12, whereby the washer is held from independent rotation, and said washer is provided at a point diametrically opposite said projection 11 with a lug 13 which enters a recess 14: in the sand box, whereby both the washer and nozzle are held from rotary movement. A nut 15 engages the externally threaded surface of thebody and clamps the washer in proper position. By this construction it will be evident that after the nozzlehas been inserted and secured in adjusted position it will be locked against rotation, so as to eilectually prevent the nozzle from working loose and the discharge end thereof from moving out of alinement with the discharge opening 8.
The nozzle is centrally bored and internally threaded as at 16 to receive a sieve or strainer 17. -This strainer comprises a tubular body portion 18 having a multitude of small perforations 18" and terminating in inlet ends 19 and 20 which are externally threaded to engage the internal threads of the bore 16, wherebythe sieve or strainer is detachably secured within the nozzle. T he outer end oi the nozzle is formed with an angular head or projection 21 to receive a wrench whereby it may be adjusted and removed. The bore 22 of the screen, which communicates with the perforations 18, is closed at its outer end by the head 20 but extends at its inner end through the head 19 and when the screen is fitted in position the tubular body will be spaced from the wall of the bore 16 to provide an air chamber 22 in communication with an internally threaded lateral opening 23 in the head 7 of the nozzle, into which an air supply pipe may be fitted, so that air under pressure may be supplied to the nozzle for discharge therethrough, as will be readily understood. This mode of'connecting the air supply pipe stance,we have shown what is termed a double sander or one that is provldedwith gtwo nozzles for simultaneously discharging two streams of sand upon the rails. It will be understood, however, that a small sand boxwitha single discharge nozzle may be made if'so desired.
The length of the sand box is such that the nozzle, notwithstanding the shape thereof, may be turned in order to adjust the distance between the discharge end of the nozzle andthe discharge opening 8, which receives the discharge pipe through which the sand is conducted to the rails. In this way the amount of discharge ofsand may be regulated. Theform of nozzle and air passage scribed.
We claim: p
l. A sand box provided with a nozzle receiving opening in one side thereof and a sand discharge opening in the opposite side thereof, in combination with an air nozzle adjustably threaded inthe first-named open- Copies of this patent may be obtainedfor five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
ing, sa'id'nozzle being internally bored and threaded and provided at its outer end with a lateral opening communicating with the bore said ooenin bein ada ted to receive 7 g b a ceiving opening in one side thereof and a sand dischargejopening in the opposite side thereof, in combination with an air nozzle adjustably threaded in the first-v named opening, said nozzle being internally bored and threadedand provided with a lateral opening "communicating with said bore to receive the end of an air supply pipe, means for holding the nozzle against displacement, and a sievedisposed within the bore of the nozzle, said sieve having enlarged end portions in threaded engagement with the interior of the nozzle and a re duced tubular bodyportion having a bore opening through the inner enlarged end portion thereof, said tubular body being disposed to provide an air chamber inline with said lateral opening. and provided with a multitude of small openings connecting its bore with said air chamber. 7
In testimony whereof we our signatureslln presence of two witnesses.
