UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSON R. AMBROSE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,571, dated December 5, 1871 antedated November 20, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANSON R. AMBROSE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vagon and Sleigh Box 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists 'in the construction and arrangement of the end board and fastenin gs for wagon and sleigh boxes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figiu'e l is an end View of a wagon'or sleigh box. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of Fig. 1, in reduced dimensions; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the end board. Fig. 4 is an end view of a modification of my end board. Fig. 5 is an inner view of the side, and Fig. 6 a horizontal section, in reducedV dimensions, of the side in said modification.
A represents the bottom board. B B are the side boards. C is the top-box board, and D is the end board. E E are cleats attached to the side edges of the end board D. 'The upper edge of the end board D has a bevel, a, as shown in Fig. 2; and the lower edge of the top-box board C has a corresponding bevel, b. d is a pin attached to the end board D at about the center of the lower edge, and ts into a hole or mortise, e, in the bottom board A. G G are the rods and fastenings for the end board, which are the same as described in the patent of H. W. Pershing, December 8, 1868, with the exception that I have provided said rods with links or eyes h h. The
cleats E E, which are commonly attached to the side boards of the box, are by my mode attached to the end board D, free from the side boards. They may be attached either in a fixed manner or hinged, both of which modes I have represented in the drawing, although I prefer the iirst method, the object being to allow the end board to be removed without raising over the top of the side boards. When the cleats are attached to the side boards of the wagon-box, as shown by Figs. 4, 5, and 6, K K representing said cleats, I provide them with shoulders L L, and the end board is cut short sufficient to allow it to pass between the cleats K K and against the shoulders L L. O O are blocks, made of iron or other suitable material to hold the end board D in position at or near the bottom of the cleats K K. The object of the wide cleats K K is to make each cleat in one piece, to strengthen the ends of side boards B B and have no space for the end board to slide in, as in the ordinary way.
The shoulders L L can be made by fastening a strip on the front part of the cleats K K, or by making said cleats in two pieces each, the front part thicker than the back part. rIhe rods and other fastenings in this case are the same as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cleats E E, hinged to the end board D, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The bevels a b on the top of end board D and bottom of top-box board C, substantially in the manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
