UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MUNN DAVIS, OF WAHOO, NEBRASKA.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,609, dated May 24, 1887.
7 Application filed Novemlger 23, 1886. Serial No. $9.688. (No model.)
My invention relates to an improvement inend-gates for wagons or any dumping apparatus-such as carts, dump-cars for coal or ore, steam shovels, excavators, and dredgers-and has for its object to dump the load by a single movement, and while the apparatus to which it may be attached is in any given position. The object is also to provide a device which will occupy little space and be permanently attached to the end-gate, whereby the said device will be always at hand when needed.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my endgate in a locked position, and Fig. 2 a partial longitudinal section throughsaid end-gate and locking device. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through Fig. 1 when the gate is opened, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the guide-plate.
A represents the side-boards of a wagon, provi ded with cleats a, attached to the inner face thereof,to form grooves a, in which the upper section, B, of the gate is entered, the said upper section being usually fitted with a central vertical brace, B, through an aperture in which and corresponding apertures in the side-boards A a pin, 1), is passed, to assist in holding the said gate in position and constitute an additional brace therefor.
A lower section, 0, of a width equal to the height of the opening required and of a length equal to the distance between the side-boards A,is hinged to the upper fixed sections. B, by apertured straps c c,attached to the said sections near their outer edges in such manner as that the lower apertured end of one and the upper apertured end of the other willregistcr in the same horizontal plane, the hinged connection being effected by passing a rod, D, through through apertures in the same plane therewith formed in the side-boards A.
The straps c are made to extend the entire width of the lower or hinged section,O, and are provided near their lower endsat equidistance from the bottom with an embossed or struckup portion, d, forming thereby in their under face a recess, 11.
I attach by screwing or otherwise to the hinged section O,about centrally the same at the bottom,a thin metal p1ate,E,having formed therein a central aperture, 6, and horizontal slots e ehupon each side of said aperture e,ex tending through the edges of the plate, as shown in Fig. 4. Horizontal lock-bars F, of a length about equal to half the entire width of the wagon, provided at one end with integral right-angular projections F, are passed through the recesses d in the straps c, and their outer straight edges enter thimbles D, secured in the side-boards A,to project usually flush with the outer face of said side-board, while the angular ends are made to enter, respectively, the horizontal slots 6 c in the guideplate E.
To operate the lock-bars F, I provide another and thicker plate, H, having a central aperture and cam-slots h h upon each side of said aperture, and pivot said plate H upon the guide-plate E by a bolt, H, made to pass the said apertured ends of the straps, and also through the central apertures of each plate and the hinged gate 0, having first, however, entered the projecting ends F of the lock-bars through the cam-slots h h,where they and the pivot-pin are capped with a suitable nut and washer.
A handle, K, is provided the locking-plate H at the upper portion thereof, which may be made integral therewith or attached thereto, the said handle, when the gate is locked, being adapted to engage a spring, K, secured at one end to the gate, purposed to retain the handle in a vertical position.
When it is desired to dump a load, the haudle K is simply pulled to the right or left, which action causes the plate H,through the medium of its cam-slots,to withdraw the lockbars F from engagement with the thimbles D, and as the gate is hinged near its extreme upper edge, the pressure of the load being from ICO the inside, the gate thereupon flies open and the load isquickly and handilyunloaded.
The manner in which I hang the gate permits of any desired size of opening, and the unlocking device, being attached to the gate, is always at hand when needed; again, the device is so simple that nothing is liable to dis order, and by simply withdrawing the pins the entire gate may be taken out.
My end-gate is equally applicable to all manner of dumping apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
The combination,in an end-gate, with the upper fixed seetiomof the lower outwardlyswingingsection, the straps c c, secured to th e adjacent edges of the two sections with their eyes in horizontal alignment, the lower straps being bent outwardly to form horizontallyaligncd loops d, the rod D, passed through the sides of the wagon and the'strap-eyes,the plate E, secured to the center of the lower section and formed with two horizontal slots, e e in alignment with the loops d, the locking-plate H, centrally pivoted to the plate E andhaving eccentric slots h h, and the locking-bars sliding in the slots Z Z and through the loops (1, and bent outward at their inner ends and entering the slots h h,substantiallyas set forth.
M UNN DAVIS.
