To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND O. SGHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Illuminated Fountain-Pens, of which the.
following is a specification.
Th1s invention has for its object to provlde a fountain pen adapted for general use and which may be effectively illuminated by an electric lamp, so that it. may be used in the dark, the lamp not interfering in any way with ordinary use of the pen.
With these ends in view, I have devised the novel writing implement which I will now describe, referring tothe accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and using reference characters to inglicate the several parts:

Fig. 8 is an elevation of the positive conductor detached. 1 .10 denotes the body which is ordinarily made of hardrubber and is provided at its forward end with an eccentric enlargement indicated by 11. The rear end of the body is closed by a metallic screw cap 12. Within the body is an ink reservoir 13, the forward end of which receives and communicates with the pen carrier, indicated by 14. 15 denotes the pen and 16 the feeder which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction. as my invention is not limited to any special style or type of fountain pen. 17 denotes an electric lamp, the screw shell of which, indicated by 18, engages a socket in a hub 19 upon the pen carrier. This hub is so located that the lamp in use will lie under the pen and feeder and entirely out of the way. 20 denotes a contact seated in the hub and having electrical connection with the screw shell. Back of the ink reservoir is a compartment 21 adapted to receive a battery 22 which is seated against a spring 23 secured within metallic screw cap 12. 2% denotes an electric conductor, which I will term for convenience the positive conductor, lying in a hole in the body and is adapted to engage the positive pole of the battery,
indicated by 25, and the center contact of the lamp, indicated by 26. 27 denotes an other electric conductor, whichI will term for convenience the negative conductor, lymg in a socket in the body. The rear end of this conductor is threaded, as at 28, for engagement by metallic screw cap 12, and its forward end is reduced as at 29 and passes through the shank 30 of a circuit closer which is adapted to slide thereon. The shank passes through a slot 31 in the body and is provided at its outer end with a head or button 32 from which a spring contact 33 extends in position to be pressed into engagement with contact 20 in the'hub when it is desired to close the circuit. Acap 34. is adapted to engage the body and its eccentric enlargement to cover the pen, lamp and circuit closer when the implement is not in use.
Under ordinary conditions, this pen operates precisely like an ordinary fountain pen. Should it be required to use it in the dark, the operator simply moves the circuit closer toward the left from the position shown in Fig. 2, placing spring contact 33 in engagement with contact 20, which closes the circuit and lights the lamp. The course of the circuit is from the positive pole of the battery through conductor 24: to the center contact of the lamp and from the screw shell through contact 20, the circuit closer and conductor 27 to metallic screw cap 12 and through spring 33 to the negative pole of the battery.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
LAn implement of the character described comprising a body having an ink' electric contact engaging the metallic cap and a circuit closer intermediate the last mentioned contact and the screw shell of the 1 lamp.
