BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 191?.
Application filed Flay 1, 1916. Serial No. 94,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andover, in the county oi Day and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to supports and more particularly to that class thereunder known as broom supports.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character which shall be simple in construction, durable in use and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed to facilitate the handle of the broom being easily and quickly inserted and removed from the support.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side view of a device attached to a fixed structure, with the broom handle inserted therein; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of r renCe refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 designates the support generally and constituting a flat substantially rectangular suspending plate 6 having a centrally located circular opening 7. This suspending plate is provided along one of its transverse edges with an upstanding flange 8 having a pair of openings 9 for the reception of fasteners 10 adapted for connecting the suspending plate to a fixed structure designated by the numeral 11. When the suspending plate is in active position, the same assumes an angular position with respect to the wall or other fixed structure towhich the same is attached and slidably receives a gripping member 12. The opposite longitudinal edges of the blank of sheet metal forming the suspending plate, are bent inwardly upon the plate to provide the same with spaced parallel grooves 1-3 for slidablv receiving the gripping member 12. The said gripping member is in the form of a flat metallic plate of substantially rectangular configuration, and has its inner transverse edge at a point in alinement cut out as at 1 1- to provide the gripping member with a semicylindrical opening, the purpose of which will be more fully defined the description of the invention is proceeded with. The material forming the ripping member 2, is upstruck at points adjacent the innermost transverse edge thereof to provide spaced hooks 15. The character 16 denotes eyes which are connected with tne upstanding iiange 8. T his gripping member is tensioned through the medium of a pair of coiled. springs 17 having one end thereof connected vith the hooks 15 while the opposite end of the spring is connected with the eyes 16, and are of the rectractile type, thereby exerting pull on the gripping member in a direction toward the opening 7 of the suspending plate, whereby when the handle of the broom or other article to be supported is inserted within the opening 7, the handle 18 of the broom will be clamped between the wall 19 of the semi-circular opening of the gripping member and the wall 20 forming the opening 7 of the suspending plate. A suitable iandle 20 is secured to the outermost transverse edge of the gripping member 12 and serving as a means for permitting the gripping member to be pulled in an outward direction against the tension of the spring 17 when it is desired to remove the broom from its holder.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction. and or" the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the inventicn relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative. and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto.
1 claim:
A support adapted for attachment to a fixed structure comprising a suspending plate of substantially rectangular form and provided with a centrally located opening, said plate being formed with inturned edges, providing the same with spaced parallel grooves, a gripping member slidably mounted upon the plate and within the groove thereof. and provided with a semi-cylindrical opening in the rear transverse edge thereof, a pair of coiled springs connected at one plate and the Wall forming the semi-cylinend with the gripping member and at their drical opening of the gripping member.
