Description

WILLIAM A. SHARP AND GEORGE HOLLENBEOK, OF TAMA CITY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,011, dated November 14, 1871; antedated October 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. SHARP and GEORGE HOLLENBEGK, of Tama City, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Proof Portable Fire-Escapes 5 and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure l represents a front view of our improved re-escape as applied to the window of a house, in readiness for the inmates to escape therefrom. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same when folded together.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures refer to like parts.
This invention has reference to an improved lire-proof portable fire-escape; and it consists of a series of links or frames of a rectangular or other suitable shape, which are hinged or connected together by coiling or convoluting the upper rounds of said links and causing the lower rounds thereof to pass through the said former or upper convoluted rounds, whereby the said fire-escape or ladder thus formed may be folded together or extended, as occasion may require.
To enable others to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to a series of links or frames, made, preferably, of a rectan gular shape, the upper one of which is constructed with hooks for attaching it to the window of the lower round of each of the said links, as shown in Fig. l, whereby an economical and desirable nre-escape or ladder is furnished. WVhen not in use the said ladder or nre-escape may be folded together, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and put away or deposited in a suitable receptacle, which may answer the purpose of an ottoman or stool,
and placed near the window for readiness in case of an emergency.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The links A A, having their upper rounds convoluted or coiled and their lower ones embraced by the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony thatwe claim the foregoing as our i invention we hereunto set our hands this Sth day of April, A. 13.1871, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. A. SHARP.
GEORGE HOLLENBECK.
