EXPLOSIVE PEOJECTILE.

Be it known that I, ERNESTO Riccio, a subject of Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, whose residence is No. 2409 Beaumont avenue, borough and county of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Explosive Projectile; and the objects of my improvement are to provide an exceedingly simple shell which may be made of brass or steel and in which may be used any explosive composition of chemical substances and the eHicacy of which is certain and inevitable. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a View of a projectile in accordance with my invention, partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the percussion disk, showing also the firing pin in side elevation and partly broken away.
The projectile comprises the charge containing shell A and the piercing cap end B, connected .together as by threading or in other suitable manner.
The cap B has an axial opening C through which extends the shank of the tiring pin D of a length to have its outer end project beyond the tip of the cap B and having a conical inner end D, the shoulder between the conical head D and shank preventing the pin from dropping out of the cap.
Seated on the outer end of the threaded extension A of the shell A and held by the cap B is a disk E provided with a central opening E filled with potassium chlorate and antimony or other readily combustible substance E capable of igniting the charge F in the shell A when subjected to concus- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for sion. The percussion charge F is held in the kaperture in the disk by layers of paper, cloth or other readily puncturable material G pasted or otherwise secured to the side faces of the disk. The covering G on the outer face of the disk holds the cone-head of the iiring pin out of Contact with the percussion charge in the disk until such time as the pin is forcibly driven inwardly of the projectile.
In operation, the projectile being fired and the extending end of the pin coming in contact with an obj ect, it is driven inwardly, and the conical head of the pin pierces the covering of the disk, `exploding the percussion charge and exploding the charge of dynamite, powder or other charge in the shell.
What I claim is:
A projectile comprising a shell containing an explosive charge, a cap detachably secured thereto and having an axial opening, a disk held between the cap and shell and having a central opening alining with the axial opening in the cap, said opening in the disk having a filling of exploding material, a covering of readily pierceable material on the faces of said disk for retaining the charge therein, and a firing pin slidably fitted in the axial opening of the cap with its outer end extending beyond the cap and having a conical head on its inner end for piercing the disk covering when the pin is driven inward and for holding the pin against outward movement.
