ALEXANDER MAszozYK, or MILWAUKEE, wIsooNsIN.
AWL.
Application filed October 23, 1915.
T 0 all 'whom t may concer'n Be it known that LALEXANDER MAszozYK, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful mprovements in Awls, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a tool, and more particularly to the class of awls.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an awl wherein the thread reel is supported in the handle thereof for the feeding of the thread through the eye in the awl needle, the latter being adjustable to any desired position and can be locked in such position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an awl ofthis character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, and the needle when not in use can be swung within the handle for protection thereby, yet when the awl is to be used the needle can be adjusted to any position either angularly or straight relative to the handle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an awl of this Character which is simple in construction, reliable and efiicient in use, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of an awl constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary Vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the thread spool or reel.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the awl comprises a handle A, preferably made from a single length strip 5 of metal, and is bent into loop or bail form with inset portions 6 to provide closely arranged spaced parallel ends 7 through which is' specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1816.
Serial No. 57,527.
passed a bolt member 8 carrying a binding nut 9, and this bolt member is formed With a hole 10 in which is inserted an awl needle 11 having the usual eye 12 for receiving the thread. It will be apparent that by tightening the nut 9 the needle 11 will be firmly secured in the bolt member 8, and said needle can be locked in its adjusted position either within or without the handle A of the awl.
Insertible between the sides of the handle A is a reel or spool 18 formed with side disks 14 having offset peripheral flanges 15, and passed through the hub of the said reel is an aXle 16 which is journaled in the sides of the handle A for the rotatable mounting of the spool or reel 13 therein, and upon this spool or reel is normally wound the thread to be trained through the eye 12 of the needle 11 when the awl is to-be used. The handle A at its closed end is formed with a circular clamping portion 17 which is designed to receive the spool or reel 13 and the flanges 15 engage the edges of the rounded portion 17, thereby holding the spool or reel therein when the awl is not in use. It will be noted that the ends 7 .of the handle, which in its loop form constitutes a frame, will be acted upon by the bolt member 8 and nut 9 for the clamping of the needle in the hole in the said bolt member.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Vhat is claimed is 1. A tool of the class described comprising a handle formed from a single length of material bent into substantially loop form to provide a frame, a bolt member passed through the ends of the frame and having a hole, a needle detachably engaged in the hole, and a nut carried by the bolt member for action upon the ends of the frame to hold the needle in the bolt member and also to lock it in adjusted position.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a handle formed from a single length of material bent into substantially loop form to provide a frame, a bolt member passed through the ends of the frame and having a 2 1,2o5,oo8
