Zo all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARREN MCARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of railroad lanterns which comprise a basket-like guard open at the top and a lantern top hinged to the upper end of the guard so that the globe, can be inserted and removed through the upper end of the guard when the lantern top is swung back. Such lanterns are usually provided with a globe holder which is movable up and down in the lantern top and pressed down upon the globe by a spring when the lantern top is closed i globe holder projects outwardly underneath down.
The principal objects of this invention are to render the cleaning of the globe andthe lighting of the lantern more convenient than heretofore and to that end the globe is enlarged at its upper end so that the' user can readily pass the hand into the globe for cleaning the same and lighting the wick, and the lantern top is provided with a globe holder which is arranged with its holding flange or portion underneath the liange of the lantern top.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a lantern provided with this improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the upper part of the lantern at right angles toFig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the upper part of the lantern with the hinged top swung back. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the upper part of a lantern embodying a modified construction of the globe holder.
' Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, A represents the body hoop or ring of the lantern having a seat a for the globe, and B represents the guard which may be of wire, as shown, or other suitable material and which is secured to the body hoop in the usual way. b represents the top ring of the guard. C represents the lantern top of usual construction comprising a cylindrical dome c and a marginal flange al, which latter is hinged at e to the top ring b of the guard and fastened to the guard at the opposite side by a spring catch f, as usual.
G represents the globe which is comparatively wlde at the top, practically as wide as 'at the bottom, so that the hand can be reading the upper end of the globe and a cylindrical neck i which is arranged Within the cylindrical dome c and capable of moving up and down in the same. This movement is limited by any suitable mean's, for instance, by studs le secured to the dome and projecting inwardly therefrom into vertical slots Z formed in the neck of the globe holder.

a suitable distance below the marginal flange al of the lantern top, so that the holding flange can properly bear upon the globe, and the globe holder can adjust itself to the length of the globe which often differs somewhat in different globes by reason of imperfections or differences in the molds.
In the modified construction of the invention represented in Fig. 4 the cylindrical neck of the globe holder is omitted and the globe holder consists simply of an annular holding flange ln, which is attached to the marginal flange d of the lantern top by spring arms o. This holding flange is arranged underneath the marginal flange of the lantern top as in the first described construction.V
I claim as my invention:
In a lantern, the combination with a guard which is open at its upper end, and a lantern top which is hinged to the guard and comprises a marginal flange connected with the guard, of a globe having its upper end arranged underneath the marginal iange of the top, an annular globe holder having its lower extremity liaring outwardly so as to form a holding liange which is arranged ungitness my hand, this 27th day of August, 19
