HORSESHOE-CALK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. *7, 1916.
Application filed July 17 1916. Serial No. 109,666.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns MGDONOUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Horseshoe-Calk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in that class of calks whose tangs or shanks are provided with lateral ribs.
The improvement is embodied in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a horseshoe illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the calks as they are to be placed upon the market separate from the shoe; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing the new form of calk driven into place Fig. 4 is a finished View of the same after the calk is secured; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of toe calk.
In my extensive experience in this art, I have discovered it is a great advantage to the horse to have more than three calks on each shoe, and therefore I prefer to apply one calk on each side of the shoe in addition to those on the heel and toe. Thus I apply calk 16, as shown in Fig. 1, the same having its inner side provided with a flat tapered tang l5, and with wedge-shaped fins 17, which project laterally in opposite directions from the base of the tang. The side grooves 11 of the shoe are provided with holes 12. When the call: is applied, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the tang enters the hole 12, and the wedge-shaped fins or ribs 17 enter adjacent portions of the groove 11 and their alined outer edges rest on the bottom of the groove, so that the call: is very firmly seated and prevented from turning or twisting.
In the operation of attaching the calk, it is not necessary that the same :shall be heated, in order to upset or rivet down the free end of the tang. In Fig. 5 I show a toe calk 16 having a cylindrical tang 15,
whose base is constructed with lateral tapered fins 17. Fig. 1.
I claim:
The combination with a horseshoe having a longitudinal side groove in its face, and nail holes therein, of a calk having its inner side or face provided with a tapered tang for insertion in one of said holes and lateral wedge-shaped fins formed at the base of the tang and on opposite sides of the same, the fins being adapted to seat in the groove in the manner described.
JAMES MCDONOUGH.
